Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
My husband won the biggest award of his career with my design.
Then he looked past me and thanked another woman.
"For twelve years, one woman has made me believe in miracles."
Richard stood beneath the white spotlight, holding the highest award in architecture. The crystal trophy gleamed between his hands.
Around me, hundreds of guests applauded.
I didn't.
My fingers tightened around my wedding ring.
Twelve years.
For twelve years, I had drawn every sketch that built Richard Hale's career.
I calculated every load-bearing wall. Corrected every structural flaw. Stayed awake through nights of stomach cramps and exhaustion while he slept upstairs.
He never touched the design software. He never checked the math.
He signed his name on my blueprints, put on an expensive suit, and walked into rooms where no one knew I existed.
And still, like a fool, I waited.
Maybe tonight would be different. Maybe after twelve years in the shadows, my husband would finally say my name.
Richard smiled into the cameras.
Then his eyes moved past me.
Toward the edge of the stage.
"Sienna," he said warmly. " Come up here."
My heart stopped.
The applause grew louder.
Sienna Brooks stepped into the light.
My blood instantly ran cold. All the warmth completely left my body.
The new assistant walked into the light. She had joined the company less than a year ago. She glided forward like a proud, triumphant swan.
She wore a vintage velvet dress. It belonged to my late mother. An emerald brooch shined brightly on her chest. It was my private treasure. I had "lost" it at home three months ago.
I noticed her slightly swollen belly. It felt like a violent slap in my face.
Richard had called me too tired for public events lately. Now I knew the ugly truth. I was making time for him to cheat. He was filling another woman's closet. He was giving her a child.
Richard held Sienna's waist. He spoke to the cheering crowd.
"Starting tomorrow, Sienna is the new Creative Director of Hale Design."
The crowd cheered loudly. Everyone loved the perfect couple. I sat in the dark and listened to their applause. A bitter laugh clawed at my throat.
We were never "one". There was no happy ending for my pain. For twelve years, I was just a reliable machine in a basement. Now, the machine was old. He took all my designs. He wore my medals. He held his young muse, ready to throw me away.
A violent shudder ran down my spine. It was not just anger. It was a bone-deep shame. A cold, razor-sharp cruelty began to rise inside me.
Did he really think he could exploit an architect for twelve years? Did he think he could build a tower without a foundation?
I forced a deep breath into my lungs. I stood up straight.
"Excuse me," I murmured.
I pushed through the oblivious crowd. I walked toward the stage. I built that very stage with my blood and sweat.
Dozens of cameras turned to me. Richard finally saw me. His loving face froze for a split second. He quickly pulled Sienna behind him. His eyes flashed a silent warning. He was telling me not to act crazy in public.
He thought I would shatter. He thought I would scream and cry. I did not.
The stark white spotlight hit my face. I felt completely, terrifyingly calm. I walked right up to him. I looked at Sienna's proud face. Then, I looked down at his trophy.
I slowly took off my wedding ring. It still carried our carved initials inside.
Clink.
I dropped the ring directly into his glass trophy. It made a sharp, mocking sound of metal against glass. It held twelve years of my sacrificed youth.
The whole room went dead silent. Richard's face twisted with panic. He spoke through gritted teeth.
"Evelyn, are you crazy?"
"No," I replied smoothly. "I am just finally awake."
I looked deep into his panicked eyes. I leaned in very close. I spoke softly, letting only him hear my voice.
"Keep the ring. Keep the award."
I reached out and fixed his crooked tie. I patted his stiff chest twice. It felt exactly like saying goodbye to a dead body.
"But starting right now, Richard, your proud genius brain is officially dead."
