"Violet isn't someone you can just push around. I can't help you with the money," Leopold said.

Once Leopold made up his mind, there was almost no one who could talk him out of it.

I gave a bitter, self-mocking laugh. 'I really was too naive,' I told myself.

I'd thought that after all the years Leopold and I spent together, I might have meant something different to him.

But now, it was obvious I'd just been fooling myself.

I didn't ask him for help again. As I walked out, I made sure to close the door.
