Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
When my husband let go of my hand and carried my best friend out of the SUV, I finally understood that our five-year marriage was nothing more than a death sentence he had written for me.
The SUV had slammed into the guardrail, spun across the pavement, and finally lurched to a halt.
Half the vehicle was dangling over the edge of a two-thousand-foot drop, while the front tires were wedged precariously against the crumbling asphalt.
The chassis groaned beneath us. Every gust of mountain wind rocked the metal frame, shifting us closer to the abyss.
My right leg was pinned beneath the crushed dashboard, waves of white-hot pain tearing through my body. Blood poured down my forehead, blurring my vision.
Just seconds ago, Alexander was sitting in the driver’s seat.
Just seconds ago, the pearl necklace he gave me on our anniversary was still around my neck—until the impact snapped it, scattering pearls across the broken glass at my feet.
I trusted him. I thought he was reaching out to pull me free.
Instead, he crawled right past my trapped body, didn't even glance at my crushed leg, and lunged into the back seat.
Directly to Madeline.
The rear of the SUV had miraculously caught on a thicker section of the rock shelf, making it the only safe zone.
“Madeline!”
Alexander’s voice shook with a panic I had never heard in all our years of marriage. He pulled her into his arms, his trembling hands frantically searching her face for injuries.
“Are you hurt?”
“I… I think I’m okay,” Madeline sobbed, burying her face against his chest.
Aside from a tiny, superficial scratch above her eyebrow, she was completely unharmed.
“I was just so scared.”
“I’ve got you,” Alexander murmured, his voice impossibly, sickeningly gentle. “I’m getting you out of here.”
I stared at them, the agony in my leg momentarily forgotten, frozen in sheer disbelief.
“Alexander…”
I raised a bloody, trembling hand toward him.
“I’m stuck. Please… help me first.”
He paused.
He didn’t look away. He looked directly at me.
He saw the blood streaming down my face. He saw the twisted metal grinding into my shattered bone. He saw the sheer, fatal drop waiting just outside my window.
He heard every desperate word I said.
For one breathless, agonizing second, his eyes shifted from Madeline to me.
Then, he made his choice.
Without a single word of explanation, he scooped Madeline up into his arms, turning his back on me completely.
“Alexander!”
I screamed, my voice tearing through my throat.
The sudden shift in weight made the dangling SUV shudder violently.
Loose gravel slipped over the edge and vanished into the bottomless canyon below.
He didn’t look back.
He kicked open the rear door and carried Madeline out onto the solid safety of the mountain highway, holding her as if she were the most precious, fragile thing in the world.
The rescue lights flashed in the distance, painting the night in cruel strokes of red and blue.
Through the smoke and the wreckage, I watched my husband—the man who had sworn to protect me in sickness and in health—gently press Madeline’s face against his chest.
He never came back for me.
He never even looked my way again.
By the time the paramedics finally cut me free from the wreckage hanging over the cliff, my voice was completely gone, hoarse from screaming his name.
As they wheeled me toward the ambulance, I caught one last glimpse of them under the blinking lights.
His wedding ring flashed mockingly in the dark.
My husband knew I was trapped. He knew I might die.
And when it mattered most, he chose her.
