Chapter 4
All those words I wanted to say caught in my throat, leaving me breathless.
The day I found out I was pregnant, Jerry held me and cried.
He promised he'd give our baby the very best.
He took care of all my meals during my pregnancy. But two months later, I lost the baby.
Jerry was clutching the urn with our baby's ashes, crying his heart out.
Yet he still comforted me gently, assuring me that we'd have another baby one day.
The doctor said I had a genetic tendency to miscarry, and if I didn't get healthier, there was a high chance I'd lose another baby.
Jerry knelt in front of me, vowing he'd develop a medicine to prevent my miscarriages.
He spent three years working on that research.
How pathetic. I thought he was working so hard for our baby, but he'd already come up with a drug to make women lose their babies.
Before anyone else even knew about it, he made me take it.
I kept waiting for him to get established at the research institute and come get me, but he was already enjoying a carefree life with his wife and son.
Andrea was still saying, "Looking back, even though it hurt, it was worth it.
"My husband wanted to make me feel better, so his wife personally cooked all my postpartum meals for me."
In a flash, I remembered that summer more than two years ago.
Jerry told me his boss's wife was having a baby in Elysian City and couldn't stand the local food.
He had me prepare postpartum meals every single day and deliver them to the maternity center's front desk.
I was on call day and night, working non-stop for 42 days. Only later did I realize it was all a trick to please his own wife.
Andrea went on, "And that's not all. After I gave birth to our son, my husband's family rewarded me with 30 million dollars.
"They even put my husband in charge of the entire family business."
I was frozen in place, unable to move. So the Gibson family knew about her and their child all along.
Yet they still mocked me every single day, calling me useless for not being able to have kids.
As lie after lie was exposed, I felt like the world was spinning out of control.
Andrea's excitement only grew as she kept talking. "My husband's really killing it.
"He's grown the company this big, and once we snag that huge Harvey Group project next month, we can coast for the rest of our lives.
"You have no idea. I'm so happy I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night just grinning like an idiot."
Just then, Dad called. "Serena, the paternity test results are in. Your real dad rushed over as soon as he heard.
"With the Harvey family backing you, the Gibsons can't mess with you anymore.
"Now that the Harvey family's got your back, the Gibsons won't dare mess with you again."
My eyes stung and felt swollen. I lost love, but fate made it up to me with family. Maybe this was what happiness felt like after all.
Seeing the car pull up at the entrance of Parew Hospital, I didn't say much else. "Dad, I'm at the entrance. I'll talk to you upstairs."
I turned back to Andrea with a cold smirk. "Then you'd better hold onto your husband for dear life and make sure you never let go of your happiness."
Her smile faded. "I will."
I ignored her and dashed upstairs.
After talking to the doctor, I sat by the bed, peeling an apple for Dad.
Andrea pushed the door open and walked in. "Hi, I finished my check-up and everything's great.
"And guess what? I'm pregnant again. You really bring me good luck.
"So I brought my husband along to thank you personally."
Jerry's voice came from the doorway. "Honey, slow down, don't trip."
I stood up and looked at him. "Honey, are you talking to me or your other wife?"
