Chapter 4
The place was in chaos. Security guards came over to drag me away. I clutched my stomach and stared them down.
I threatened, "I'm pregnant. If you touch me and anything happens, you'll be the ones held responsible."
The guards saw my obvious baby bump and stopped in their tracks, looking uncomfortable and unsure.
"Miss, this is a press conference. You really should leave," one of the guards said.
I was furious.
I snapped, "Seriously, do you guys need glasses? Open your eyes and look. Who's actually making a scene here?"
I had no clue what kind of game Nancy was playing. Sure, the guy in the video looked like Edward, but with all the advanced tech nowadays, who knew if it was real?
Maybe it was just some AI face swap trick.
Unless I saw Edward alive and in the flesh, I was not falling for it.
As I was thinking, it suddenly hit me: there was someone who could really back me up.
I muttered, "That's it. Susan can totally prove who I am."
I scrambled for my phone, about to dial Susan's number.
But as soon as I saw Nancy, I instantly shut off my screen.
I taunted, "If you really are Edward's wife, then you must have Susan's number, right?
"Edward's not even in the country. You could forge all the proof you want, but none of it actually proves you're his wife.
"If you think you're legit, go ahead and call Susan over. Let's see if she even recognizes you as part of the Carter family."
Susan was a renowned painter, with her exhibitions held all over the world.
No matter how gutsy Nancy was, there was no way she could get someone to pretend to be Susan.
Besides, Susan absolutely doted on me. The moment I married into the Carter family, she gave me the Carter family's heirloom diamond bracelet.
Every time Edward and I argued, Susan would always take my side and scold him for being in the wrong.
Susan treated me just like her own daughter. Now that I was pregnant, she even transferred 200 thousand to my account so I could stock up on health supplements and keep myself nourished.
Nancy curled her lips into a mocking smile.
She sneered, "You just have to learn the hard way, huh? Honestly, I bet you don't even have her number."
As soon as she finished, she dialed Susan's number.
She whined, "Susan, someone's causing trouble at the company, saying I'm a homewrecker. Can you please come over and help me out?"
Nancy put the call on speaker, and a voice I recognized instantly came through the phone.
Susan declared, "Who dares lay a finger on you? I'm coming to back you up right now."
The live chat instantly blew up with comments.
One commented: [No need to guess anymore. Nancy's definitely the real wife. What mother-in-law would be so affectionate with a fake daughter-in-law?]
Another commented: [Sophia's such a shameless woman, always scheming to climb the social ladder and become a big shot.]
Someone commented: [She's been totally humiliated, but she still won't back down. Seriously, her face is made of steel.]
I stared at Nancy in disbelief, but she just waved her phone in my face.
Nancy said, "Even Susan herself recognizes me as Edward's true wife, but you just refuse to accept it."
I clenched my fists so tight that my knuckles went white, my chest felt like a storm was raging inside, and my shoulders were trembling so hard that I could barely stand still.
I shouted, "Susan, it's me, Sophia. I'm Edward's real wife! How could you stand up for some shady outsider?"
Before I could even finish, Nancy snatched her phone back and slapped me hard across the face.
She snapped, "Who gave you permission to make such a racket here?"
Nancy put on her best pitiful act, her voice all sweet and whiny as she said into the phone.
She whined, "Susan, can you come over to the office and vouch for me? Otherwise, there's always some shameless woman trying to climb the social ladder and become a big shot."
I bet that person on the other end must be a fake. I pulled out my phone and sent Susan a message.
I briefly explained what happened today and asked her to come to the office to vouch for me.
Susan replied almost instantly, saying she'd drive over right away.
With Susan's fiery temper, I was sure Nancy would be booted out of the company the second Susan walked through the door.
All I had to do was wait for Susan to arrive. Then the whole truth would be laid bare for everyone to see.
It wasn't long before Susan's car pulled up at the entrance.
She got out, making her way slowly with her trademark cane.
When I saw it was really Susan, I felt like a ton of bricks had finally dropped from my shoulders. I rushed over to help her out.
I said, "Susan, you're finally here. Please, just tell everyone I'm Edward's real wife.
"Some random woman just popped up with a kid, saying she's part of the Carter family.
"They've been teaming up against me this whole time. Don't let them walk all over me."
