After Eugene left, Sylvia pulled me into a tight hug. "You silly girl, why didn't you tell me all this sooner?"

I shook my head weakly against her shoulder. "I thought I was just overreacting."

"Bullshit." Sylvia let go and gripped my shoulders. "Listen—Eugene's either blind or just playing dumb. Everyone can see how Evelyn feels about him—everyone but him."

I forced a bitter smile and said, "He says they're just good friends."
