Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
Owen knew Ivy had been taking my place before I did.
At home, he sat at the kitchen table with his cereal going soft. The school had given us the day off while they reviewed the card, but Graham was already at work, or said he was.
"Dad told me not to tell you about the science fair," Owen said. "He said you'd feel bad because you missed it."
My hand stopped around the coffee mug.
I had not missed it. I had never been told it existed.
"Did he say that about other things?"
Owen nodded once. "Ivy brought snacks when I had the counselor meeting. She knows which breathing video I like. I thought she was helping you."
The worst part was that he still sounded guilty for liking her.
"You're allowed to like someone who was kind to you," I said. "You're not responsible for the lies adults told around you."
He looked at me then. "Did Dad say you were sick?"
Before I could answer, the principal emailed the access log. Graham's laptop had approved the form from our home network. A second entry showed he had added the note about my distress two minutes later.
Not a mistake. Not an office mix-up.
I called Rosa Martinez, the family mediator who had once helped a nurse from my unit write a parenting plan after a divorce.
"Don't confront him alone before you secure the records," she said. "Ask the school to preserve everything. Then we make a temporary plan that protects Owen, not your anger."
The door opened downstairs.
Graham had come home early.
"We need to talk," he called.
Owen's spoon shook against the bowl.
I stood up.
"No," I said. "First, you're going to tell our son why you taught him to keep his life from me."
Graham stopped at the bottom of the stairs. I could not see his face from the kitchen, only his shadow against the hall light.
"Mara, don't turn this into something it isn't," he said.
Owen's shoulders climbed toward his ears. I moved my chair so it sat between him and the doorway. Without making a show of it, just enough that he could see me without looking past his father.
"It's already something," I said. "The school has the access log. They have frozen the card. Rosa is preserving the records."
For the first time, Graham did not answer immediately.
Owen set his spoon down. "Did you tell them Mom was scary?"
"Answer him," I said.
