Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
When my son had a panic attack at school, the nurse called another woman before she called me.
I arrived at Oakridge Elementary still wearing my hospital scrubs, my badge turned backward and a strip of tape clinging to one wrist from the overnight shift. Owen was sitting in the counseling room with a paper cup of water between both hands.
Ivy Marsh knelt beside him.
She looked up first. "He's calmer now."
For one second, relief moved through me. Then I saw the school emergency card on the desk.
My husband's signature sat at the bottom.
Beside my name, someone had typed: Contact father first. Mother may become distressed during episodes.
I did not remember approving it because I had not.
"Why wasn't I called?" I asked.
The nurse's face tightened. "Mr. Ellis told us Ivy was Owen's emergency mother when you were working nights. The card said to call him before you."
Owen looked at the floor.
"Dad said you'd enough to worry about," he whispered.
The room went quiet around that sentence.
I knelt in front of my son and took both his hands. "You're never too much for me."
Behind me, Ivy said softly, "Graham told me you knew I was on the card."
I turned the page over.
There was a confirmation box beside my name.
It had been checked.
The principal took the card from the nurse with the careful hands people use around something already broken. "Mrs. Ellis, we'll not allow any pickup change until we review this."
Ivy stepped back from Owen's chair. She did not defend herself. If she had smiled or claimed a right to him, I could have put all my anger in her. Instead, she looked as confused as I felt.
Owen reached for my sleeve. "Am I in trouble?"
"No," I said. "Someone made a choice about you without telling us. We're going to fix that."
But when I said us, I understood how much work it would take to make him believe it.
