Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
Daniel raised his glass higher.
"I'm happy to announce that Harper will be joining Vale Bridal as our new creative partner."
A scatter of polite applause moved through the room, led by Daniel's golf partners near the front. Harper offered a modest smile for the lens.
"She'll lead our new digital strategy and take Vale Bridal into its next chapter," Daniel continued smoothly into the mic. "And this finally gives Claire something she has needed for a very long time."
He turned to look at me, his expression full of spousal affection.
"A chance to step back."
More people clapped. To the room, it sounded like a loving husband offering his hardworking wife a long-overdue retirement.
I looked at Harper standing in my mother's dress while my husband announced she was taking my place.
For the first time in twenty years, keeping the peace felt more dangerous than breaking it.
Ellie stepped forward onto the landing. "Dad. Stop."
Daniel kept smiling.
"What does 'step back' mean?" Ellie asked, her voice carrying over the fading applause.
"Sweetheart, tonight isn't about business."
"You just made it about business."
The room went quiet.
Ellie pointed toward Harper. "Does this mean Mom doesn't own the studio anymore?"
Daniel lowered his glass. "Of course she does. Don't be silly."
"Then what does Harper own?"
Daniel's jaw tightened. "All the paperwork has been properly handled."
I looked directly at my husband. "What paperwork, Daniel?"
He leaned in, his voice dropping. "Claire, not here."
I didn't yell. I didn't raise my voice. I simply looked at him and asked, loud enough for the first three tables to hear:
"What exactly did I sign, Daniel?"
Daniel's smile twitched. Behind him, the red light on Harper's camera kept blinking.
"The management agreement," Daniel said into the mic, with a nervous laugh. "The standard transition we went over. It's all handled."
I let the lie sit there and stepped back.
Daniel watched me, trying to read my face. "Claire?"
"Go ahead," I said. "Finish your announcement."
