Chapter 2
Just then, the door to the interrogation room was flung open.
Wendy, dressed in a white dress, burst in, crying her heart out. She was followed by Brad's father, Alan Springer, Brad's mother, Joanna Springer, and Brad's sister, Eloise Springer.
"It's her! This evil woman killed Brad," Wendy screamed, pointing right at me. "Brad handed everything he owned to my son yesterday.
"She must've been bitter and killed Brad. You have to make her pay for this murder."
Joanna lunged at me, but the cops held her back.
"Isabel, you jinx. You ruined my son. Give him back to me," Joanna shrieked.
Eloise pointed at me. "Brad must've been blind to marry someone like you. Ten years and you couldn't even have a kid, and now you kill him. You deserve to go to hell."
I stared coldly at their nasty faces.
They seemed to have forgotten how, when Brad's business crashed, they were the ones begging me to hand over every dollar I had left so he could start over.
They also forgot all the favors and money they leeched off me over the years.
Now that Brad's gone, I was the only punching bag they'd got left.
I ignored their yelling and looked at Wendy, asking calmly, "You say I killed him. Where's your proof?"
Wendy was furious at how calm I was. She screamed, "You can't prove you weren't there. You're the killer. Brad died so horribly, and you're not even sad. You're heartless!"
"Why should I be sad?" I gave a small, mocking smile. "He cheated, transferred away his assets, and forced me into a divorce, leaving me with nothing."
"You..." Wendy was so mad she couldn't get the words out.
I stood up, smoothed out the wrinkles in my clothes, and swept my gaze over everyone in the room.
"Unless you have evidence, I'm still Brad's legal wife and first in line to inherit everything. So you can all keep your mouths shut," I said.
My words made the whole interrogation room fall silent.
The Springers and Wendy stared at me as if they'd never met me before.
Yeah, they were used to the old me, the one who always swallowed their insults, never fought back, never talked back.
But they forgot even the meekest rabbit will bite when pushed too far.
Besides, I was never some helpless rabbit.
Since there was no direct evidence, I was released after twenty-four hours at the police station.
As soon as I stepped out of the police station, I saw Eloise and Wendy waiting for me.
When Eloise spotted me, she rushed over, raising her hand, ready to hit me.
I dodged aside and twisted her arm behind her back. I didn't use much force, but she was completely stuck.
"Isabel, you killer! Let go of me," Eloise struggled, her face contorted with fury.
"Eloise, you can't throw accusations around. Say one more word and I'll sue you for slander." I let go of her hand, my voice cold as ice.
Eloise staggered, and Wendy grabbed her arm to steady her.
Wendy's eyes were red. She put on her best pitiful act. "Isabel, I know you hate Brad, but he was still your husband. He just died. How can you be so cold?"
"Husband?" I let out a mocking laugh, as if I'd heard the funniest joke. "He handed over everything to his illegitimate son. You really think that's what a husband is?"
I stepped right up to Wendy, looking loftily at her. "Wendy, quit pretending. Brad's dead, and let's be real, no one's happier than you.
"Now you and your son can finally inherit everything openly. You're gonna struck it rich."
Wendy's face went ghostly pale, her lips trembling. "You're lying. Brad and I were truly in love."
"Truly in love?" I scoffed. "If you really loved him, would he be dead now? Don't forget now that he's gone, you're the biggest winner here. When it comes to motive, you had way more reason to want him dead than I did."
With that, I ignored her and headed straight for the car parked by the roadside.
Wendy's furious screams rang out behind me, but I didn't turn around.
When I got back to the villa, I saw Brad's parents sprawled out on the living room sofa like they owned the place, while two movers were busy carrying my things out the door.
"What do you think you're doing?" I asked, my voice icy cold.
Joanna jumped up from the sofa the moment she saw me, hands on her hips, yelling, "What's it look like? This is Brad's house. Now that he's dead, of course Alan and I are moving in. You jinx, get out of here, now."
"Brad's house?" I strode right up to her, pulled out the property deed, and slapped it down on the coffee table. "Why don't you take a good look and see whose name is actually on this villa's deed."
