Chapter 1
"Mom, why do three million people think you’re dangerous?"
My seven-year-old daughter, Lily, stood in the kitchen doorway. She was holding her tablet, her small hands trembling.
I froze. I wiped my hands on a dish towel and walked over.
The screen showed a massive social media page. The bold header read: Living With My Difficult Wife.
I pressed play on the pinned video.
It was me. I was sitting right here on the kitchen floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
The text across the screen read: *The Night My Wife Lost Control.
I scrolled down. The comments felt like physical blows to my chest.
"Take the kid away from that woman."
"She’s not fit to be a mother."
"Poor Ethan. He’s endured this toxic behavior for too long."
I couldn't breathe.
They didn't know the truth. That video wasn't about a forgotten anniversary or a silly marital fight.
That was the night I got the call from the hospital. The night my mother died.
I watched the short clip again. This time, I looked closer at the background.
Reflected in the dark glass of the oven door, I saw him. Ethan.
My loving, supportive husband wasn't running to hold me. He was standing in the shadows, adjusting the camera angle to get a better shot of my complete devastation.
Three million people had watched the exact moment my heart broke.
Strangers had turned my agonizing wails into a trending audio sound. Lily's classmates had probably seen this. The parents at her school probably thought I was a threat.
A sudden wave of intense panic hit me.
I sprinted to the downstairs bathroom. I locked the door and sank to the floor, gasping for air.
I turned on the faucet and scrubbed my face with freezing water. I scrubbed hard, wishing I could erase my own features. I just wanted to be someone the world didn't recognize.
When I finally looked in the mirror, the tears stopped. A strange, terrifying calm washed over me.
I pulled out my phone and searched for the account.
Ethan had been secretly filming me for three years. But he only made the account public six days ago.
Six days. Three million followers. That’s why I hadn’t known until today.
Then, I saw his newest post. It was a teaser for a live broadcast.
Tomorrow, 8 PM: Why I’m Finally Leaving My Unstable Wife.
I clicked on the thumbnail. It was a photo of me, looking down, looking broken.
I was wearing a soft blue dress.
My heart stopped.
I looked down at my own body. I was wearing that exact blue dress right now.
He took that picture this morning.
Ethan wasn't documenting my past.
He was waiting for my next breakdown.
