Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
As boarding began for my daughter's birthday trip, I saw my husband in Vanessa's Facebook post.
Mark was already at Disney World with her and Lily.
Sophie sat beside me, still holding her dad's boarding pass.
In the photo, Lily sat on his shoulders. Vanessa pressed close to him, and all three wore matching Mickey ears. Behind them was the castle Sophie had waited all year to see.
Underneath, Vanessa had written, "I haven't seen Lily this happy in months. Thank you for everything you've done for her, Mark."
Sophie looked from the photo to the gate.
"Is Dad already there?"
My throat closed up.
Just a minute earlier, Mark had texted that something had come up at work and told us to board without him. He'd promised to catch the next flight as soon as he was done.
"Mom?"
"Yes. He's already there."
"Is he still going to fly with us?"
"No."
Sophie looked down at Mark's boarding pass. She'd been holding it for him so long that the corners were crumpled in her fist.
"He took Lily on my birthday trip."
I took screenshots of Vanessa's photo and caption, then called Mark.
He answered right away. Music and children's laughter filled the background.
"Where are you?"
"You already saw, didn't you?"
He didn't sound worried in the slightest.
"You let Sophie sit here waiting for you while you went to Disney World with Vanessa and Lily?"
"I told you two to go ahead. I never told you to cancel the trip."
"You promised to spend her birthday with her."
"Vanessa just got out of a terrible marriage. Lily's had a rough few months. She's never been to Disney World, and Sophie has."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"So you lied to Sophie and told her you'd meet us at the gate?"
"I knew you'd have a problem with it."
"And that gave you the right to hide it from us?"
"Rachel, I don't want to argue. Lily needs one good weekend. Sophie will have plenty of other chances."
I looked at my daughter.
She still held Mark's boarding pass. Her eyes stayed fixed on Vanessa's post.
"She's been waiting a year for this trip."
Mark sighed.
"I knew you'd turn this into a scene."
He hung up.
The boarding announcement sounded again. The gate agent warned us that this was our final chance to board.
Sophie didn't stand.
"Are we still going?" I asked.
She placed Mark's boarding pass on the empty seat beside her.
"I don't want to see them."
I took her to the counter, told the gate agent we wouldn't be boarding, and asked the airline to pull our checked bags.
As we walked away from the gate, Sophie kept looking back. Maybe she was waiting for Mark to appear through the crowd and tell her the picture was some kind of misunderstanding.
Mark never came.
I booked a hotel near the airport. Our window faced the runway, and Sophie sat there watching plane after plane lift into the sky.
Mark had promised her this birthday trip the year before.
That day, Sophie had taped a picture of the Disney castle to her bedroom wall and made a countdown calendar. For the past month, she'd crossed off one number before bed each night.
Last night, she'd colored the final square red and written beside it, "Disney World with Mom and Dad."
The paper was still tucked inside her coat pocket.
I ordered her favorite pizza and asked if she wanted to go swimming downstairs.
She shook her head.
"Mom, can we go somewhere tomorrow where Dad won't be?"
"Yes."
"And Lily won't be there?"
"Just the two of us."
Then she leaned into my arms.
At eleven that night, after Sophie had fallen asleep, my phone lit up again.
Mark had sent me a message.
"Vanessa and Lily are coming home with me. Put Sophie in the playroom and make up her bed for Lily."
