Nathaniel’s POV

Nathaniel stood in the doorway, holding Isolde’s birthday cake.

“Isolde, I’m home.”

No one answered.

He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

The penthouse was dark. No music played in the kitchen. No lamps glowed beside the living-room windows.

“Isolde?”

Still nothing.

Nathaniel frowned and placed the cake on the console table.

She was angry. That was understandable.

He had missed their anniversary and most of her birthday, but he had brought her favorite chocolate cake. Tomorrow, he would take her shopping or book a weekend away.

Isolde had always forgiven him before.
