Chapter 2
I stormed over to my bestie Lily Hughes' place and dragged her out of bed to drink with me.
I tipped my head back and took a big gulp of booze. The liquor burned all the way down my throat.
Lily tried to stop me. "Take it easy. Drinking too much isn't good for you."
"Don't lecture me. You're no better, okay?" I shot back.
I tipped my head back and took another big gulp.
"Girl, I'm not exactly a bad catch, but why is he like that?" I complained.
Lily looked thoughtful. "There are only three possibilities: either he's impotent, he's into guys, or he's saving himself for someone else."
Was he impotent?
That couldn't be it. Even though we never really got physical, he always had a genuine physical reaction.
Was he into guys?
That didn't seem right either. We went to the same high school and college, and plenty of guys tried to hit on him, but he never seemed interested.
Saving himself for someone else?
"Is he saving himself for my sister?" I blurted out.
Lily paused for a beat, then nodded like it actually made sense. "That could really be it."
How did I forget that?
I was just the stand-in bride. Grayson's original bride wasn't supposed to be me.
My sister bailed because she was in love with someone else, so I got stuck marrying Grayson.
After we got married, Grayson was perfect in every way, except in the bedroom.
Maybe he really was saving himself for my sister. Rumor had it he was into Rebecca.
I remembered whenever he helped me with fingers, he'd never even look at me.
Did he think I looked cheap or gross when my eyes were full of lust?
All those feelings—anger, hurt, shame—just crashed over me at once.
I smashed my glass on the table.
Lily jumped, startled.
"What the hell are you doing? You scared the crap out of me," she said.
Just then, my phone started ringing again.
It was Grayson. He'd been blowing up my phone ever since I walked out.
I just hit decline and hung up.
"I want a divorce!" I blurted out.
I was not going to tie myself down to a lost cause.
Lily just yawned, not bothered at all.
"So just get divorced. Why smashing the glass?" she said, barely interested.
"It's not just dangerous, you know. Someone's gotta clean up the mess," Lily said with a sigh.
"I'm tired. I just want to sleep. I'm crashing here tonight," I said.
"Whatever, stay as long as you want," Lily replied.
She stood up, stretched, and headed off to take a shower.
"Get over here and sleep," Lily called out.
Lily's place was a total mosquito haven. I barely slept at all and woke up with a bunch of itchy welts.
She shot me an apologetic grin. "You know I'm useless at this kind of thing. The housekeeper's been off for a few days, and I hardly ever stay home, so... the bugs kinda took over."
By the time I left Lily's place the next morning, it was almost 10 AM.
Grayson was usually at the office by now, so I was caught off guard when I opened the door and saw him sitting on the couch.
His hair was a mess, and he was still in his pajamas, looking totally wrecked.
He glanced up at me, and I could see the dark circles under his eyes. His eyes were bloodshot.
He looked like he'd been up all night, totally wrecked.
His voice was all raspy. "Where were you?"
"Why do you care?" I snapped, my voice scratchy from last night's booze.
Right now, I couldn't stand the sight of him. No way was I wasting my breath.
Just as I tried to brush past him to get to my room and change, he suddenly reached out and grabbed my wrist, stopping me in my tracks.
Grayson's eyes were glued to my neck, blazing with suspicion and anger.
"Who were you with last night?" Grayson demanded
His outburst came out of nowhere, totally catching me off guard.
Honestly, I was done. I couldn't care less about explaining myself to him.
"None of your business," I snapped.
I yanked my hand free and headed upstairs without another word.
