I woke to the sound of Noah’s voice inside the ambulance.

“Her blood pressure is dropping.”

An oxygen mask covered my mouth. White lights flashed above me as the vehicle moved.

“Stay with me, Claire,” he said. “We’re almost there.”

At the hospital, people surrounded my stretcher.

A doctor leaned close enough for me to see her face.

“The pregnancy developed outside your uterus,” she said. “It has ruptured, and you’re bleeding internally. We need to operate now.”

“My baby?”

Her silence answered before the anesthesia did.
