Chapter 5

“I’m telling the school everything,” I said.

James glanced at Eli’s sleeping face, then lowered his voice.

“Can we please wait until Mom calms down?”

Our son lay beneath a hospital blanket, an oxygen tube under his nose, and James was still measuring the emergency by his mother’s pain.

“No.”

“Anna—”

“I’ll update his medical file. I’ll document the delay with his injector. And the school will know exactly why Margaret cannot be authorized to pick him up.”

“Make the medical report,” James said. “Just don’t turn this into a campaign against her.”

“The truth is not a campaign.”
