Chapter 1

The numbers swam before my eyes as I tried to focus on our monthly budget spreadsheet. Luke was out at another 'networking dinner,' leaving me to handle the bills as usual. His laptop hummed on the kitchen table, the screen's glow illuminating the quiet apartment.

I clicked through to our bank's website, frowning at the balance. Something wasn't adding up. Our savings had dwindled more than expected, despite both our salaries increasing last quarter. I scrolled through recent transactions, looking for the discrepancy.

A notification popped up—Luke had received an email. I normally wouldn't have looked, but the preview caught my eye: "Re: Your Post on TruthSpeak Forum." The subject line made my stomach twist with unexpected unease.

I hesitated for only a moment before clicking. The email contained a simple link to a forum thread. My finger hovered over the trackpad before curiosity won out.

The post title hit me like a physical blow: "I'm Only Settling for My Wife."

Username: SilentDragon88. Luke's gaming handle since college.

My hands trembled as I began to read:

"Five years in, and I've realized I'm just settling. My marriage is fine—good enough, not great. She's devoted, caring, stable. But there's no fire, no passion like I had with C. I dream about my ex constantly. Sometimes I wake up next to my wife wishing she was someone else. Is it wrong that I'm still in love with C after all these years? That I regret choosing stability over passion? My wife tries so hard, and I feel like a fraud every time I tell her I love her."

The room tilted sideways. I gripped the edge of the table, my wedding ring catching the light. Five years of devotion reduced to "good enough, not great." Five years of loving him with everything I had, and he woke up wishing I was someone else.

C. Chelsea. It had to be.

My longtime friend. Luke's college girlfriend before me.

I scrolled through the comments, each one driving the knife deeper. Luke had responded to questions, sharing intimate details about their past relationship, how passionate and free they'd been together. How settling down with me had been the "adult choice" but not the one his heart wanted.

The laptop screen blurred as tears filled my eyes. I blinked them away, refusing to cry. Not yet. I needed to know everything.

I opened his browser history, then his email. Nothing obvious. But when I checked his app drawer, I found a messaging app I'd never seen before, hidden in a folder labeled "Work Tools."

My hands moved mechanically, opening the app. No password required—he'd never expected me to look. The conversation history loaded, and Chelsea's name appeared at the top of the list.

Months of messages. Secret meetings. Inside jokes. Heart emojis.

"Miss you already," she'd written just yesterday. "Our time together is never enough."

"Soon we won't have to hide," Luke had replied. "Just need to figure out the right timing."

My stomach clenched as I scrolled back through their history. This wasn't new. They'd been reconnecting for over a year, their messages growing increasingly intimate. Planning meetings when I was working late. Discussing their "unfinished business."

I felt hollow, like someone had scooped out my insides and left nothing but an empty shell. Five years of marriage. Five years of believing I was enough.

I navigated back to our banking portal, this time with new purpose. I pulled up our joint savings account history, scanning for unusual withdrawals.

There they were—a pattern of transfers, small at first, then growing bolder. Three months ago: $2,000 to an account I didn't recognize. Last month: $3,500. And two weeks ago: $50,000.

Fifty thousand dollars. Half of our house down payment fund.

I searched through Luke's email again, this time looking for property records or contracts. In his archived folder, I found it—correspondence with a real estate agent about a luxury condo downtown. The same agent had sent a congratulatory email when the offer was accepted, with Chelsea copied on the thread.

My husband had bought another woman a home with our money. Our future.

The room spun around me as the full weight of the betrayal crashed down. Not just an emotional affair or lingering feelings—Luke had been systematically funding Chelsea's life while I worked overtime and clipped coupons to build our savings.

I closed the laptop slowly, my mind racing ahead. They thought they were so clever, so careful. They had no idea who they were dealing with.

I wasn't just the woman Luke had settled for. I was the woman who would make them both regret the day they decided to betray me.
