For several seconds after I said it, Ethan did not move.

My wedding ring lay on Sophie’s hospital bracelet between us. He stared at it, then gave a short shake of his head.

"No."

I had expected anger. Instead, he sounded almost certain.

"You’re angry. You’re hurt. I understand that. But you’re too angry to make this decision right now. We’re not getting divorced."

I looked at him.

He pushed his chair back and stood.

"I stop going to Vanessa’s. Whatever boundary you want, we make it."
