Chapter 3
Shawn's lawyer brought Anna over, and the corridor was now a mess.
Anna had wounds on her hands and neck, blood tainting her clothes, her hair disheveled.
She desperately shoved the approaching healthcare workers and shouted, "No, leave me alone.
"Just let me die. No one cares about me anyway."
There was blood on her face, and tears soon covered her face.
Though she was making a scene, she looked pitiful.
She didn't stop yelling until Shawn walked over to her.
Under everyone's gaze, he reached out and held her in his embrace.
It was really strange. It was so noisy, and I was a few feet away from them.
However, I still heard his words, like a blade stabbing suddenly in my heart.
He said, "I do care."
Anna was frantically struggling. Yet upon hearing his words, she suddenly froze.
After a good while, she burst into tears, saying, "I didn't want to hurt her.
"I'm just jealous that someone loves her. I also want someone to love me."
I stood in a daze at the door of the ward, looking at them hugging each other tightly.
I watched as Shawn patted her on the back and comforted, "I understand. It's not your fault."
In an instant, my world seemed to twist and shatter into pieces.
Anna finally relented and let Shawn take her to the ward.
Shawn was completely focused on her, his brows deeply furrowed with unconcealed distress.
He didn't even notice I'd been watching them the whole time.
Nor did he notice that I had followed them all the way to the ward.
After helping Anna lie down, Shawn finally seemed to remember he was supposed to bring me food.
Just as he turned to leave, Anna grabbed his arm.
Anna pouted and demanded, "Stay with me. As long as I'm here, you're not going anywhere."
"I have my own business to attend to," Shawn said coldly.
Despite his words, he didn't push her away.
Anna's eyes welled up. Suddenly, she took out a pair of scissors from nowhere.
She pressed the tip of the scissors against her neck, her eyes wild with madness and fierce resolve.
She threatened. "No excuse. If you dare leave, I'll end my life right here. Life hasn't been worth living for a long time anyway."
There were other doctors in the ward.
I seriously doubted that a mere pair of scissors could make Anna take her own life.
But Shawn's face darkened, and he snapped, "Stop acting crazy."
Anna gritted her teeth and pressed the blade harder. This time, blood actually welled up on her neck.
Anna screamed, "Then get the hell out. Like any of you actually care if I live or die."
Medical staff rushed forward to get the scissors, but Anna brandished it wildly, her face twisted with fury.
Shawn's expression darkened, but ultimately, he had no choice but to give in.
He sat down by the bed, let out a weary sigh, and gently held Anna's arm. "Come on, that's enough. Calm down, will you?"
Anna finally released the scissors.
Her eyes swollen from crying, she snapped, "Then call that bitch right now and swear you won't go stay with her again."
She wouldn't even call me by my name.
She fixed her gaze on Shawn, waiting for his response.
Shawn's face darkened. "You're really pushing your luck."
How strange. I used to trust him so completely—so certain he'd never tolerate Anna using such vile slurs against me.
But at that moment, I just knew my phone was going to ring any second now.
My hands trembling, I fumbled for my phone in my pocket before finally turning away and heading back to my ward.
As I expected, my phone soon rang.
Shawn's voice came through, deceptively gentle and flawlessly composed. "Joss, there's been an urgent matter at the office…"
