Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
On the exact day of our eighth wedding anniversary, my husband put a $5 million diamond ring on his mistress's finger.
I stood in the freezing shadows of the Veil Estate ballroom. My chest felt like it had been hollowed out.
Under the dazzling spotlights, Sebastian kissed her hand. "Celeste, I’ve owed you this promise for fourteen years."
Fourteen years.
Fourteen years ago, he knelt in the rain outside my door, handing me a fragile, dying infant. "Her mother is dead, Clara. Please help me." For six years, I abandoned my youth, my friends, and my design career, staying up countless nights to keep his sickly daughter alive.
Eight years ago, when his company was drowning in debt, I gave him a secret marriage and secretly poured my entire family fortune into his accounts to save him.
I bled for him.
And now, his mistress was wearing the pure white couture gown I had spent six months hand-stitching in secret for my own wedding day. She had carelessly ripped the delicate pearl collar—the very collar I had pricked my fingers a hundred times to sew—just to show off her cleavage.
A reporter shoved a microphone forward. "Mr. Hart! What about Ms. Clara? She has managed this estate and raised Lily for over a decade!"
Sebastian didn't even flinch. He glanced at the dark corner where I stood. His eyes were completely devoid of the warmth he showed me just this morning. Instead, they held a cruel, mocking warning.
"Clara?" he laughed, shaking his head as if hearing a ridiculous joke. "She’s just a housekeeper. An employee we paid well to help out. Let's not blur the lines between staff and family."
Staff.
A free maid he slept with. An ATM he used.
Then, the true agony hit. Lily, the 14-year-old girl I had raised since she was in diapers, ran onto the stage.
Just yesterday, I had stayed awake until 3 AM making the pearl hairpin she was wearing. Seeing her run toward me, I instinctively took a step out of the shadows, my arms opening to catch her.
But she ran right past my open arms.
She threw herself into Celeste’s arms, burying her face into the stolen gown.
"Mommy!" Lily cried out, her voice echoing through the speakers.
Sebastian hugged them both tightly. "Lily finally has her real mother back," he announced to the cheering crowd.
The heavy photo album in my hands—filled with 14 years of Lily's smiles and our 8-year marriage certificates—slipped from my numb fingers, hitting the floor with a heavy thud.
Julian Hart, Sebastian's exiled brother, stepped out of the dark. He looked at the spilled photos on the floor, then at my trembling hands.
"Clara," his voice was a cold whisper. "Why are you still standing in the shadows, clapping for the thieves who drained your blood?"
I looked at Sebastian kissing Celeste. I looked at the daughter who stepped on my heart to please a stranger.
The suffocating misery inside me suddenly evaporated, replaced by a pure, venomous rage. Sebastian thought I was just a desperate, aging woman who would swallow this humiliation to keep a roof over her head.
I picked up the photo album and dropped it straight into the trash can.
"Julian," I said, my voice steady and freezing. "They didn't steal my life. They just dug their own graves."
Sebastian thought he could publicly humiliate me and keep the empire I built.
He didn't know I was the true heir of the Veil Estate.
He didn't know I owned every brick of this mansion, every cent in his accounts, and the very stage he was standing on.
He wanted a spectacular wedding? Fine. I would personally build the stage. And when the curtain rose, I would make sure he lost absolutely everything.
