Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
I kept my hand on the mouse for several seconds after the document opened, almost as if waiting for the words on the screen to become something else.
Something simpler.
Something that would allow me to believe I had misunderstood.
I wasn't looking for a reason to be angry with Thomas.
The truth was, I had spent the entire night trying to find a reason to believe he hadn't crossed a line.
I wanted the house to be just a house.
I wanted helping Lily and Noah to be nothing more than Thomas doing what he always did—taking care of people who needed him.
But the title on the screen made that harder.
A future plan was not created for a temporary problem.
It meant someone had already imagined what came next.
I opened the file.
The first section was the coastal residence.
The same house I had seen in the bank notification.
The same house I had briefly believed was meant for us.
The document explained how the property would provide stability for Lily and Noah, and how it would become part of their future.
I continued scrolling.
The next section was about Lily’s company.
It wasn't just an investment.
There were plans for growth, future development, and long-term support.
Then I saw Noah’s name.
His education.
His opportunities.
The preparation made for a future he had not even reached yet.
The final pages contained long-term asset arrangements.
Protection.
Security.
Everything carefully considered.
Everything planned ahead.
I stopped scrolling.
Because I finally understood what hurt.
It was never just the house.
It was the intention behind it.
Thomas had not simply helped someone through a difficult time.
He had thought about where they would live, what they would become, and what their life would look like years from now.
And the hardest part was that I knew why.
Thomas had always been the person who stayed when others walked away.
The person who carried responsibilities that were not his because he could never convince himself to ignore someone who needed help.
That was the man I loved.
That was the man I supported.
But somewhere along the way, his kindness had crossed a line I never knew existed.
I looked back at the notebook beside my laptop.
The page with our ocean house was still open.
The corner was bent from how many times I had returned to it.
For years, I thought Thomas was waiting for the right moment to build our future.
Now I was looking at proof that he had always known how to create one.
He had simply created it somewhere else.
“Evelyn?”
Thomas stopped when he saw the laptop.
His eyes moved from the screen to my face.
He didn't ask what I had found.
He already knew.
I looked at the title one more time.
Bennett Family Future Plan.
Then I looked at the man who had spent twenty-two years promising me a future.
“Thomas.”
My voice was quiet.
“When did helping them become building their future?”
