The next morning, I made a cup of barely drinkable hotel coffee and logged into the joint account Daniel and I shared.

The balance was more than $170,000 lower than I remembered.

I didn’t call Daniel. I downloaded twelve months of statements and sorted the transactions by recipient. One company appeared again and again.
