Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
The suffocation in my marriage didn't come from loud screaming matches.
It came from the slow, deliberate erasure of my future.
Liam and I had an agreement.
After his big promotion, we were going to start trying for a baby.
On a quiet Sunday afternoon, I left a bottle of prenatal vitamins on the kitchen counter.
It was supposed to be a subtle, exciting hint for my husband.
Instead, Delaney found them.
I was in the laundry room when I heard glass shatter.
Then, a loud, piercing sob echoed through the house.
I rushed into the kitchen. Delaney was collapsed on the floor, clutching her chest, hyperventilating violently.
The bottle of vitamins lay spilled across the tiles.
Liam sprinted down the stairs. Pure panic was written all over his face.
"Laney! What's wrong?"
He dropped to his knees, immediately pulling her into his chest.
"You're having a baby," Delaney choked out. Her fingers dug into his shirt like claws.
"You're starting a real family. You're going to throw me away just like my dad did!"
She let out a gut-wrenching wail. "I'm going to be completely alone!"
"No, no, hey," Liam shushed her, rocking her back and forth on the floor.
He kissed the top of her head repeatedly.
"I would never abandon you. You are my priority. Always."
I stood a few feet away, completely paralyzed.
I was watching my husband comfort another woman... over the "terrifying" prospect of having a child with his own wife.
An hour later, Liam successfully put a "devastated" Delaney to bed.
He walked into our master bedroom and shut the door.
He didn't look excited about the vitamins.
He looked furious.
"We need to put the baby plans on hold," he said coldly.
I stared at him. My heart shattered against my ribs.
"Liam, we've been planning this for a year. I'm thirty. I want to be a mother."
"And you will be, eventually," he snapped.
"But Delaney's abandonment issues are at an all-time high right now."
He looked at me with absolute dead-eyed seriousness.
"The thought of a newborn replacing her in my life just triggered a massive trauma spiral."
"She's twenty-four years old, Liam!" I pleaded, my voice trembling.
"I cannot put my uterus on a waitlist until your stepsister decides she's ready to share your attention! This is our marriage!"
Liam looked at me with chilling disappointment.
"You are so incredibly selfish," he whispered.
The words felt like a physical slap.
"A traumatized abuse survivor is having a mental breakdown in the next room, and all you care about is your own timeline."
He took a step closer, his voice dripping with disgust.
"If you can't even show an ounce of empathy for my fragile sister... maybe you aren't emotionally mature enough to be a mother anyway."
Toxic guilt washed over me instantly, completely suffocating my anger.
Later that evening, I felt horribly ashamed of my "selfishness."
I walked down the hall to bring Delaney a glass of ice water to apologize.
The guest room door was cracked open.
I pushed it gently, expecting to see her crying in the dark.
"Delaney? I brought you some water," I whispered softly.
She wasn't crying.
She was sitting cross-legged on the bed, scrolling through TikTok and munching on a bag of potato chips.
She looked up at me.
There were no tears. No shaking. No panic.
A slow, deliberate smirk spread across her face.
"I don't want your water, Clara," she said.
Her voice wasn't fragile anymore. It was sharp, steady, and dripping with venom.
She tossed a chip into her mouth, chewing slowly.
"You should probably throw those vitamins away, by the way."
My blood ran cold. "What did you say?"
"A baby?" Delaney let out a dry, mocking laugh.
"Did you really think a baby would make him put you first?"
She tilted her head, looking at me with pure, malicious pity.
"He's never going to let you have a family, Clara. Not as long as I tell him I need him."
"You faked that panic attack," I breathed, my hands shaking around the glass.
Delaney's smirk deepened into something genuinely wicked.
"I didn't have to fake anything," she whispered.
"He wants to choose me. I just gave him the excuse."
She slid off the bed, walked right up to me, and wrapped her hand around the edge of the door.
"Sweet dreams, Clara."
She pushed the door shut right in my face.
Click.
She wasn't broken.
She was a predator playing a sick game.
And my husband was her willing accomplice.
