Chapter 5

The elevator's mirror reflected my face, ghostly pale.

I pressed the button for the first floor, leaning against the icy wall to keep myself from falling.

The pain in my lower abdomen kept coming in waves, sharper and sharper. I could feel my life slipping away, drained with every surge of warmth.

I couldn't let myself fall. I told myself that I couldn't fall now. My baby was still waiting for me.

Gritting my teeth against the pain, I started the car and floored the gas, driving straight for the nearest hospital.
