Chapter 2
I rolled my eyes and licked my lips self-consciously.
"You were making me pity you yesterday but not so much now that I hear you speak." I spoke distastefully and tried to move past him but he stopped me.
"What do you mean?"
I sighed.
"I was feeling sorry for you that you had to marry me.
I pitied you and I pitied myself but now I only feel bad for myself as I've been married to a heartless jerk."
"Yah!" Derek exclaimed sharply and I jumped.
"What?" I tried my best not to be intimidated, one by his body and two, but his hot gaze.
Derek advanced closer.
"You better watch that mouth around me." He breathed.
"I don't know what I'll do if you keep up that behaviour."
My eyes widened.
"Did you just threaten me?" I crossed my arms.
"You did, huh?
Well then listen up, Mr. Jerk, I'm not afraid of your empty threats."
Derek chuckled.
His hand slipped around my waist and I realised I was wearing only my bathrobe.
Suddenly, I felt very naked.
"Empty threats?" Derek laughed and then leaned in, his eyes shining.
"I'm going to prove you wrong, little miss arrogant."
I felt myself being pulled extremely close to Derek and my hand rested on his bare chest instinctively.
I felt Derek stiffen under my touch but he didn't shake it off.
Instead he leaned in and whispered against my skin.
"Next time you dare to talk back, Rylee.
I'll make sure you can't walk for at least a week."
I reddened at his words and died of embarrassment when he pulled back and his eyes seemed to rest on my neck for a little while more than necessary.
He smirked and his hands reached out to pull my bathrobe's flaps closed.
"You hate my senseless talks and I hate your guts but I swear to God-" he paused.
"Don't entice me more than I already am, lest you should regret ever talking back to me."
Saying so, he walked around me leaving me standing there in an embarrassed daze.
The breakfast in the Lewis residence was a very quiet one with just me, Derek and his father sitting on a very long table, everyone minding their own business.
"Derek," Suddenly his father spoke.
"Sit with your wife." He gestured.
"It's not good manners to make your wife sit so far away especially when it's not even been a day since you were married to each other."
Derek seemed ready to answer back but thought better of it.
Getting up slowly, he moved into the seat beside me.
"Don't be too happy." He spoke through his teeth.
"I'm doing this because I don't want to hurt my father.
I'm not in the least interested in sitting beside you." He cut through his toast and spoke discreetly.
I smiled.
I had to put up an act too.
Gavin Lewis was very good to me and I had to keep still in return of his kindness.
I'd handle this brat later.
Grinning cheerfully, I placed a hand on Derek's hand.
"It was so nice of you say that, father." I smiled like happy bride.
Then throwing a discreet glare in Derek's direction, I went back to eating.
He was going to get it from me today.
Ugh, the conceited jerk.
Derek successfully managed to escape my wrath this morning as he went to work but it was almost five in the evening and he'd be returning anytime.
I straightened out my pale pink skirt and crossed my legs, distractedly glancing at the TV.
The first day of married life and I was already bored.
You could say I missed Derek because even if he was a pain in the ass, at least he was around.
I glanced at the clock.
The evening was getting darker and the skies greyer.
The sound of a distant thunderstorm indicated the beginning of heavy downpour.I jumped as the lightening struck and suddenly the lights went off.
Stupid fears began haunting me.
I was alone in this huge mansion.
Derek's father was in his room sound asleep and I doubted anyone in the staff knew about my fear of lightening and thunderstorms.
My heart pounded as the rain got heavier.
The windows were rattling as the rain pattered noisily against the glass and the thunder was making it difficult for me to sit straight and not tremble with fear.
Derek still hadn't arrived.
Sleeping was the only way out, provided I could sleep in this horrible weather.
With quick, jerky movements I slipped off my matching jacket and got under the blankets covering myself completely.
Ahhh, when was that jerk going to get home?
I tossed and turned around restlessly as the rain kept on pouring in torrents and my fear kept on heightening.
Suddenly, the door to our room was thrown open and I screamed.
It was so dark and lightening seemed to surge through the darkness making rippling shadows that scared the hell out of me.
Instinctively, heavy sobs wracked through my body and I began heaving, gasping for air as I clenched the covers tighter.
Derek's POV
I already felt bad for hurting Rylee this morning.
And now I was also late.
I was impressed by how she'd kept her calm in front of my father despite me insulting her unnecessarily.
It made me realise that maybe she wasn't really a gold digger.
If she had been, she would have never cared about the one person who I deeply loved.
Also, the thorough background check on her and her family had revealed nothing.
Nothing fishy at all.
In fact she was just a dedicated daughter who'd been put at stake for the partnership deal struck between our fathers.
It scared me that she was growing on me slowly.
All day at the office, her beautiful face, her honey voice and the feel of her warm body against mine had haunted me and I wanted to get home as soon as possible.
I wanted to apologise to her for having doubted her dignity and intentions.
Even from the beginning, the only thing that had irked me about her was my doubt about her intentions but now that was out of the way and I was forced to see just how beautiful and innocent she was.
A bit sharp-tongued, yes, but I could certainly handle a little bit of sass.
I had a feeling that the daily dose of beautiful savagery was going to be very healthy for me.As soon as I stepped into the room, Rylee gave a cry.
