Chapter 3

I picked up my bag and headed for the door.

Olivia reached out and caught my arm. "Emily, where do you think you're going? James has bent over backwards for you, so don't throw it back in his face."

Her nails dug into my wrist.

I wrenched my arm free.

Before the door swung shut, I heard one of them drop her voice behind me. "It's only an engagement party. Is all this really necessary?"

The elevator's mirrored wall threw my reflection back at me.

I looked pale and worn out, and a ring of red marks circled my wrist.
