Chapter 3
Charles's face darkened. He snapped, "Emily, have you lost your mind?
"We've got a client meeting coming up, and you show up dressed like that? Do you want them to think we're running some kind of escort service and get the whole company on a crime show?"
Emily's smile froze on her face.
Charles wasn't done yet. He kept going, his face cold as ice. He demanded, "The executive assistant is out for a prenatal check-up, and you volunteered to take over. Just look at what you've done.
"Your screw-up cost us the best meeting room, and you couldn't even book the right number of rooms. Are you secretly working for the competition, trying to take us down?
"And you still have the nerve to smile? How can you even laugh right now?"
Whispers started to spread through the crowd.
One said, "Mr. Reed really hit the nail on the head."
Another chimed in, "We're all fed up with Emily. She can't do anything right, always holding everyone back."
Someone said, "Seriously, she's the only one here in a bikini. It's so embarrassing."
A person said, "I didn't even dare walk past the pool earlier. I was worried people would think I was some kind of creep."
Emily, now the center of everyone's gossip, had tears welling up in her eyes. She muttered, "I didn't mean it, Charles. How could you be so harsh to me?"
She looked both vulnerable and pitiful.
"Charles, huh? Looks like you two are pretty close," I said, giving Charles a sidelong look.
Charles instantly started to panic.
He spat, "What are you even talking about? Calling me Charles like that? Are you just making stuff up now?"
He spun around and grabbed my hand, refusing to let go. He said, "Sophie, please don't misunderstand. My mom and her mom are old friends; that's the only reason she got into the company. I had nothing to do with it.
"You're the only one I care about. You know that."
After pledging his loyalty, Charles immediately told Emily to scram, his expression icy. He said, "Go change your clothes. Stop embarrassing yourself here.
"Are your business skills even half as good as your little schemes?"
His open ridicule made Emily go pale as a sheet. She staggered away, barely keeping it together.
Charles finally let out a long sigh of relief and turned to me. He asked, "Babe, did I do okay?"
I snorted, pulled out my phone, and handed him a screenshot, shooting him a sideways glance. I said, "See for yourself."
Charles took the phone, looking confused.
Two seconds later, his expression changed in a flash, veins popping out on his forehead. But he forced himself to swallow his anger.
He said, "Sophie, let me use your phone for a moment."
Just then, Emily stepped out of the room, now dressed in something more appropriate.
Charles swept his gaze over the crowd and ordered, "Nobody leaves. Stay right where you are."
Then, fixing his cold stare on the suddenly frantic Emily, he spoke each word with chilling clarity, "Call the police. We've got a thief to catch."
The cops still hadn't arrived.
Thanks to the hotel manager, they found Charles's phone in Emily's locker in the changing room.
When Charles saw those embarrassing confessions and messages on Instagram, his expression soured.
Turns out Emily hadn't just blocked me: she'd also harassed most of Charles's female clients.
Charles never bothered to set a lock screen password.
Back when we were dating, he'd always joke, "Sophie, my phone's yours to check anytime."
Ironically, it was Emily who ended up benefiting from that.
She posted all these boastful messages, throwing shade at Charles's female clients for being old and washed up. She even told them to back off and stop falling for Charles.
The female clients were so furious that they sent angry voice messages right away.
All those connections Charles had spent years building were down the drain in an instant.
But the real kicker was Avery Logan, the big-shot client Charles was supposed to meet today.
After getting roasted by Emily, Avery just flat-out canceled the deal.
Emily, not the brightest bulb, actually thought Avery was a woman.
She had no clue Avery was a six-foot-three beast, rocking a full beard and enough chest hair to put a bear to shame.
