Chapter 2
I stood outside Cordelia's office, my palms sweating bullets.
Should I knock? Should I wait? If I knocked, I'd piss off Chloe. If I didn't, I'd get in trouble for the urgent file. I'd either get chewed out or get kicked out, anyway.
I gritted my teeth and knocked on the door three times, but there was no response.
I knocked again, but still nothing.
I banged harder, and the door shook from the force of my knocks. Still no response.
Something was off. Cordelia usually heard everything.
I hesitated for a few seconds, then grabbed the doorknob and gave it a gentle twist.
The door opened. And then I saw something I'd never forget for the rest of my life.
In Cordelia's office, there was a wall that looked like a giant bookshelf. But now the shelves had been pushed aside.
Behind them was a small room, around 220 sq.ft. There was a bed in the room.
And on that bed were two people, two women, to be exact, and they were completely naked. They were Cordelia and Chloe.
My mind was blown. My nose started bleeding right away.
Both beauties turned to look at me as the door swung open.
Our eyes locked. The air was frozen for a heartbeat.
Their gazes shifted from hazy to shocked, then to furious, and finally murderous.
"I'm so sorry. I'm terribly sorry," I apologized repeatedly.
The next second, I scrambled out of there, practically tripping over myself, and slammed the door shut behind me.
My back was pressed against the door, my heart pounding like a drum. Meanwhile, my nose was still bleeding like crazy.
I was screwed, totally screwed.
Rule number one was a hundred times more strict than rule number two. Getting fired from the company would be the best-case scenario for me right now.
Rich folks had all sorts of ways to make someone disappear, after all.
I was only 23, with my whole life ahead of me.
Was I not gonna see the sun rise tomorrow?
I stood at the office door, every second dragging on like an eternity.
After what felt like forever, around 20 minutes, the door finally opened.
Chloe came out, fully dressed. She shot me a glance, which was so cold. It sent a chill straight to my bones. If looks could kill, I'd be dead a thousand times over.
She didn't say a word and strode off, her heels clicking sharply down the hallway.
The hallway went quiet again.
Then Cordelia's voice came from inside. It was cold as ice. "Come in."
I took a deep breath and pushed the door open.
Cordelia was sitting behind her desk in her big leather chair, already dressed. Her hair was pulled back in a neat bun, and her face gave nothing away.
The bookshelf was back in place. It was like nothing had ever happened.
I walked up to her, head down, with a coffee table between us.
"You barged in all of a sudden. What's so urgent?" she asked, her voice calm to the point of being scary.
"I-I got an urgent file from the Finance Department," I stammered, handing her the document.
She flipped through it, then held out her hand. "Give me a pen."
I quickly handed it over.
She signed it in a flash and slid the document back to me. "Take it back to the Finance Department."
"Got it," I replied, grabbed the file, and turned to leave, finally letting out a sigh of relief. 'Am I off the hook that easily?' I wondered.
As I reached the door, her voice came from behind me. "Come back right after you deliver it. I need to talk to you."
'Crap, I'm screwed,' I thought.
I stalled as much as I could, taking my sweet time delivering the file to the Finance Department. Then I hung out in the break room, downing two glasses of water to kill time.
After that, I dragged out a bathroom break for as long as possible.
By the time I was done procrastinating, it was almost time to clock out, and I couldn't stall any longer. So, I braced myself and finally walked back into Cordelia's office.
The sun was already dipping low, casting a warm orange glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Cordelia was sitting on the couch, holding a cup of coffee. She wasn't drinking it, only holding it in her hand.
I stood across from her, barely daring to breathe.
"Did I ever tell you that when Chloe comes over, nobody's allowed to bother us?" Cordelia asked.
"Yeah, you did," I answered, nodding.
She was about to say something, lips parting.
I cut her off. "But you also said if I get an urgent file, I have to tell you right away."
Cordelia froze for a second, then gave a cold, mocking laugh. "Didn't expect you to start talking back. Got any more excuses? Let's hear them."
I clammed up.
"Lost your nerve? Weren't you jumping in a second ago?" she snapped.
I still kept my mouth shut.
Her anger spiked, her voice going up a notch. "Speak!" she barked.
I looked up at her, doing my best to sound calm. "Ms. Owens, I'm sorry for what happened earlier today. I don't think I'm the right fit for this job, so I'm handing in my resignation."
