Chapter 11

Sylvia froze for a second before realizing the word "Luna" referred to her.

She scrambled to her feet and staggered toward the stone door. It was sealed shut, but she spotted a faint sliver of light beneath it.

That was a thread of moonlight piercing through the barrier, guiding her way.

Sylvia braced herself and slipped her finger into the narrow gap.

The moonlight curled around her finger, as if inviting her in.

She took a deep breath and pushed hard against the door.

The stone door rumbled open.

*****

Outside the Forbidden Sanctuary, it was hell.

The square in front of the Crescent Shrine was soaked in blood.

Werewolf bodies lay scattered everywhere, some still in their wolf form, others had shifted back to their human form.

Vampire monsters darted through the moonlight, their shapes twisting and writhing like blobs of living shadow. They left corrosive marks wherever they passed.

Sylvia stood on the steps of the shrine, her legs feeling weak.

"Luna!" A werewolf, covered head to toe in blood, spotted her and rushed over, collapsing at her feet. "Save my brother, please. He's barely hanging on."

Sylvia glanced down and saw another werewolf cradled in his arms. The guy's abdomen had been ripped wide open, his guts were out, and his pupils were starting to fade.

"I-I can't." Sylvia stammered, her voice trembling. "I-I'm not the Healer. I-I don't have a wolf."

"You are." The werewolf seized her hand and pressed it to the wounded one's forehead. "The Moon Goddess never makes mistakes. You and the Alpha are fated mates. You must be the Healer."

Sylvia's fingers touched the wounded werewolf's skin. It was warm, sticky, slick with blood, and she could feel life slipping away with every heartbeat.

She shut her eyes tight, frantically recalling what those old tomes had said: [Her touch could heal serious wounds.]

But she had no idea how to touch or heal.

"Please!" the werewolf cried out. "My brother's only twenty. He shifted for the first time only a short time ago. Please don't let him die."

She felt his skin growing colder under her fingertips, his life slipping away. Helplessness crashed over Sylvia, and desperate tears welled up in her eyes.

Suddenly, a surge of heat rose from her core.

This wasn't ordinary warmth. It felt like something inside her was awakening. It was searing, burning energy.

The heat coursed through her veins, raced to her fingertips, and gathered into a ball of silvery light in her palm.

Sylvia's eyes widened in shock.

The light in her palm grew brighter and warmer, shining like a tiny moon. Almost without thinking, she pressed it against the gaping wound on his abdomen.

Silver light burst forth.

Before her eyes, the wound began to knit itself back together. His guts retracted into his body, the skin sealed up, and no scar remained.

His glassy eyes regained focus, and his breathing grew steady.

"He's alive!" the werewolf holding him cried out, his voice trembling with joy. "You're really the Healer."

Sylvia stared at her hands, the silver light still dancing on her fingertips, as if it had a life of its own.

She realized that she was really the Lunar Healer, and she could protect the pack.

She looked up. Chaos still reigned in the square. Werewolves kept falling in battle, and vampire monsters were swarming in.

In the distance, she spotted a black-flame wolf tearing through the horde. It was Kaelen in his wolf form, towering nearly seven feet at the shoulder.

Wherever he passed, black flames scorched everything, reducing vampire monsters to ashes.

But he was getting hurt, too.

Sylvia saw a shadowy claw slash across his hind leg, his flesh peeling back in ragged strips, and for a moment, his black flames flickered weakly.

"Kaelen!" Sylvia blurted out.

The black-flame wolf whipped around, his golden eyes slicing through the chaos, locking onto her. In that gaze, there was shock, fury, and fear.

'Get back!' His voice thundered in her mind, the Alpha's mind-link echoing loud and clear. 'Sylvia, get back to the Forbidden Sanctuary.'

Sylvia didn't go back. She gazed at the silver light flickering on her fingertips, feeling the awakening power inside her. It was warm and mighty, like a full moon rising in her chest.

She stepped forward, and silver light rippled out from beneath her feet, spreading across the square in shimmering waves.

"I'm Sylvia Ashby." She heard her own voice. It was no longer barely a whisper, but clear, firm, and carrying an undeniable authority. "I'm the Healer of the Crescent Pack."

Sylvia raised her hand as silver light burst from her palm and shot into the sky. "The seal of the Moon Goddess breaks today."

Sylvia felt her body transforming: her bones stretching, muscles reforming, and fur spreading across her skin.

She looked down and saw her hands shifting into silvery claws. Her perspective rose as she grew taller, and she saw everything.
