Chapter 2
I was stunned for a moment, thinking back to how he'd once made me a promise, too. Later, when I asked him about it, he just said he'd forgotten all about it.
The guests sitting below were all folks I knew. They'd once come to my wedding with Jenson, and now here they were, just as relaxed, showing up for his second wedding as if it was the most normal thing in the world.
Just like before, their cheers and well-wishes filled the room, buzzing with excitement and congratulations.
One person walked in with his hands in his pockets, grinning as he said, "Jenson, you seriously dare to make vows again? Aren't you scared you'll get karma for that?"
He stood at the front of the crowd, chin lifted high as he stared at Jenson, radiating that unmistakable air of a spoiled trust fund kid. He was arrogant, bossy, and full of himself.
However, his eyes were so red it was alarming, and his body wouldn't stop shaking.
Jenson shot Simon Cummings a look of pure annoyance. "Simon, I didn't invite you."
Shock hit me hard, and I just stared wide-eyed.
Before I took that dive into the sea, I sent Simon a message and asked him to take care of everything for me after I passed away.
At the very least, after the ocean messed me up and I was in no shape to be seen, I figured Simon would help clean me up a bit, make me look halfway decent.
I wondered what Simon was doing there at Jenson's wedding.
Some guests started whispering, "Why did Mr. Cummings crash this wedding?"
Another person said, "Word is, he and Jenson's ex-wife were childhood sweethearts…"
People were whispering all around as Jenson's face darkened. "Simon, anyone tied to Barbara isn't welcome here. Just leave and tell her to stop clinging and playing her games."
I bit my lip, but as a ghost, I couldn't feel any pain.
Simon laughed. "Jenson, do you think I wanted to come here?"
His eyes locked onto Jenson and Ramona's clasped hands, and his eyes turned bloodshot, growing redder by the second.
He yanked out his phone, the screen showing a pic of me at eighteen. He stormed up to Jenson and shoved the phone right up to his face.
His voice trembled, and two fat tears rolled down his cheeks. "This is the girl you stole from me. When you took her, she looked just like this—all good, full of life."
Like a kid, he swiped away his tears with the back of his hand. "Now she's lying in the morgue. Jenson, listen carefully, even if it costs me everything, I swear that I won't let Barbara go through this hell for nothing!"
He pointed his shaking finger at Jenson, fury all over his face. "You picked Barbara's memorial day for your damn wedding? Jenson, even beasts wouldn't sink this low."
Jenson looked stunned. "What did you just say?"
Simon laughed angrily, voice full of scorn. "Seriously, quit the act. Wasn't it you and your mistress who pushed Barbara to her grave with your filthy affair? Now you're pretending like you're all innocent?"
Jenson's hand gave a shaky twitch. "What exactly happened to Barbara?"
Simon stared up at the ceiling, holding back his tears, refusing to let them fall. "Barbara's dead."
He was helpless, just like a child left all alone. "Barbara is no longer with us. Jenson, does this make you happy?"
Jenson's face slowly went ashen, all the color draining away as the weight of Simon's words finally hit him.
Simon threw some cash onto the ground. "I'm here on Barbara's behalf to deliver her final wedding gift. I hope you two, bitch and bastard, rot together forever."
With that, Simon spun around and strode off.
Jenson jumped down from the stage and chased after Simon. "Stop right there. Tell me exactly what you mean!"
Simon didn't even turn his head as he said, "I'm going to handle Barbara's funeral. Do you want to come? Unfortunately, you're fucking not worthy!"
He walked away, his steps faltering, leaving behind a back that radiated pure loneliness.
Suddenly, it hit me. Originally, Simon was meant to be the loyal second lead who'd devote his whole life to protecting Ramona.
However, he never stuck to his script.
He never treated me like the story's scheming villainess, not for a single day.
The System always said Simon was just like me. He refused to play along and ended up as the glitch in this world.
Now, this glitch was about to lay another glitch to rest.
I turned and looked back at Jenson once more.
His face went ghost-white, eyes blank and dazed, and he muttered under his breath, "Everything is fine. It has to be fine."
Jenson gave Ramona a nervous, brittle smile—like he was telling her, but also trying to talk himself down. "Barbara was way too selfish and scared. No way she'd ever take her own life."
I gave a cold and bitter smile.
