Chapter 4

On the day of the wedding, there wasn't a single festive decoration outside the Bennett house.
Richard and Diane stood on the porch, constantly rushing me to hurry up.
There was no joy on their faces. They looked like they were finally getting rid of a massive burden.
Vanessa, wearing a pink designer dress, stepped forward and tried to grab my hands.
"Nora, please take good care of yourself. I'm going to miss you."
I smoothly pulled my hand back.
"Right."
Vanessa's eyes instantly welled with tears. She spun around and buried her face in Sebastian's chest, acting as if I had just bullied her.
Sebastian's face darkened.
"Nora, Vanessa is trying to say a genuine goodbye."
I didn't respond.
My eyes were fixed on the end of the street, where a massive motorcade of black Rolls-Royces was gliding into view.
The vehicles pulled up silently in front of the Bennett house. Private security personnel stepped out immediately, rapidly forming a perimeter and keeping the nosy neighbors at bay.
"My god, whose motorcade is that?"
"I thought the Bennetts' biological daughter was marrying a dying old man from the Sterling family?"
"Does that look like the escort for a dying man?"
Richard and Diane were completely stunned.
Vanessa gripped Sebastian's sleeve so hard her knuckles turned white.
Sebastian's expression grew darker by the second.
The lead driver stepped out and opened the rear door.
A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped out of the car.
The rumors always said Alexander Sterling had been recuperating overseas for years. Everyone assumed the Bennett family was sending a bride over for an end-of-life companionship arrangement.
But the man standing in front of us was in his early thirties, radiating absolute health without a single trace of illness.
Sebastian stepped forward instinctively.
"Mr. Sterling? Why are you here personally?"
