Chapter 4
On the screen, there was footage of Madison and Andrew caught on camera outside a bar.
I added, "That was the day of my and Andrew's third wedding anniversary. He told me he was working overtime."
Madison's face went pale.
Andrew frowned. "Charlotte, is there any point in bringing this up?"
"Yes," I replied.
I set my phone down on the table. "If you're going to apologize, then make it clear."
Helen slammed her hand on the table and snapped, "You want Andrew to kneel for you now?"
I replied, "No need, he's not even worthy of that."
Emily snapped, "Who the hell do you think you are?"
Richard barked, "Emily!"
Andrew stared at me. "Charlotte, do you really have to push things to the limit?"
I looked at him and said, "Andrew, you're the one who made our marriage irreparable, not me."
In the conference room, a few executives exchanged glances.
Richard finally spoke up. "Andrew, apologize."
Andrew gripped the divorce papers, his face tight with tension.
After a few seconds, he said quietly, "I'm sorry."
I asked, "Sorry for what?"
He gritted his teeth. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have neglected you all those years we were together."
"And?"
"I shouldn't have made you feel so wronged."
"And?"
Emily couldn't hold back anymore. "Charlotte, that's enough!" she snapped.
I said, "Andrew, are you going to say it yourself, or should I play the recording?"
Andrew jerked his head up, staring at me in disbelief. "You recorded it?" he blurted out.
I nodded calmly. "For three years, every time the Foster Family humiliated me, I saved every single recording."
Helen's expression soured, while Madison took a step back.
Richard immediately said, "Charlotte, there's no need to go this far."
I looked at him and replied, "Mr. Richard Foster, are you looking for a real apology, or do you just want us to put on an act?"
Richard fell silent.
Andrew finally lowered his head. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have gotten involved with Madison while we were still married," he said quietly.
Madison panicked. "Andrew!"
Andrew didn't even look at her. He added, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have let my family look down on you."
I pressed, "Is that all?"
His voice dropped even lower. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have tried to hide assets during the divorce."
Everyone in the conference room sucked in a breath.
Richard pressed his hand down on the table. "Andrew!" he barked.
Andrew's face turned pale.
I picked up my bag and said, "Now that's what I call an apology."
Richard immediately asked, "What about Greenfield Capital?"
I cut him off. "Mr. Foster, I came here for an apology, not to fix your problems."
Helen stood up and yelled, "Are you fooling us?"
I looked at her and shot back, "I never said an apology would get you off the hook."
Emily lunged at me. "Charlotte, you're not going anywhere!" she yelled.
I sidestepped her.
At the conference room door, Ethan walked in with two people.
"Ms. Foster, please mind your manners," he said.
Richard's face changed the moment he saw Ethan. "Mr. Quinn," he said.
Ethan placed a document on the table. "Mr. Richard Foster, this is the official notice from Greenfield Capital terminating our partnership. Please sign it."
Richard stared at the document, not moving a muscle.
I turned and walked out.
Helen's furious voice rang out behind me. "Charlotte, you'll regret this!"
I stopped in my tracks. "Mrs. Foster," I said.
I turned around. "I was done with regret three years ago."
That night, Emily deleted her post. But the screenshots had already spread like wildfire.
In the Foster Healthcare group chat, someone dropped all of Madison's show-off pics.
The headline was blunt. [Company's broke, but the owner's son still takes the whole family overseas to party after his divorce.]
Zoe messaged me. [Richard was so pissed, he smashed a glass right in front of everyone.]
I replied: [Don't bother telling me about that.]
She messaged me again right away. [One more thing. Madison just went live.]
I clicked into the stream. Madison was sitting in front of the camera, her eyes red and puffy.
She said, "I don't want to explain too much. When it comes to relationships, people only ever see what's on the surface."
The chat exploded with people feeling sorry for her.
She continued, "I never wanted to hurt anyone. Andrew and Charlotte's marriage was an empty shell by then."
I watched her acting like she was the innocent one.
She said, "Some people have money and power, and with just a word, they can break up a family. But I believe good people won't always get pushed around."
The number of viewers in the livestream kept climbing.
The chat started coming for me.
[Damn, the ex-wife is savage.]
[She's divorced and still going after his company?]
[So money means you can do whatever you want?]
I closed the livestream.
Five minutes later, Ethan called, "Ms. Evans, Madison is making you the target online."
"I saw it," I replied.
"Do you want me to handle it?"
"Hold off for now."
"What do you want to do?"
I opened Madison's livestream. She was wiping her eyes.
"Foster Group has a new product launch tomorrow. She'll probably be there, right?" I asked.
Ethan replied, "Yeah. She's showing up as Andrew's girlfriend now, trying to keep their business partners from jumping ship."
"Then tomorrow it is."
"You're going to be there in person?"
"Yeah."
I stared at all those people trash-talking me in the chat.
If Madison wanted to play the poor victim in front of everyone, I would call her out right there and blow up her little show.
*****
The next day, I showed up right on time for Foster Healthcare's new product launch. There were plenty of reporters waiting at the entrance.
Madison was standing next to Andrew, dressed in a white dress.
The moment she saw me, her expression changed instantly.
Andrew said under his breath, "What are you doing here?"
I replied, "Just here to watch the show."
Emily came charging over. "You're not welcome here!"
I shot back, "Since when did the lobby of Foster Healthcare turn into your personal living room?"
Emily was stunned into silence.
Madison stepped up and said, "Ms. Evans, if you're here for me, we can talk privately. Don't let this affect Andrew's work."
She sounded oh-so considerate.
The reporters were already lifting their cameras, ready to catch every moment.
I turned to her and asked, "So, you said on your livestream last night that I was using money to bully you?"
