The word barely came out.

The medical examiner kept his eyes on me.

"No," I said again.

"I never saw his face."

The detective lowered his paper cup.

After the accident, they told me the fire had made a viewing impossible. Daniel had been identified before I arrived. The car was his. His wallet, watch, and wedding ring had been found with the body.

Everyone spoke as if the answer had already been confirmed.

I had believed them.
