Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
The day after I filed for divorce, Sophie moved my husband’s mistress into the home I had built for her.
I returned to the house that afternoon to collect my remaining personal items.
I unlocked the front door and stepped into the living room. A large, colorful fabric banner hung right across the main wall.
It read: WELCOME HOME, MOM.
Every single family photo of me was gone. In their place, the Mother's Day photo of Graham, Vanessa, and Sophie was framed and placed dead center on the coffee table.
I walked upstairs toward the master bedroom.
The door was wide open. Vanessa stood right inside my walk-in closet, draped in one of my expensive silk robes.
She turned around and gasped softly, a sickeningly sweet smile spreading across her face.
"Oh, Audrey, you're back," Vanessa purred, leaning against the closet frame. "Graham said I could use this space now. I hope you don't mind. I just want Sophie to feel like we are a real, settled family."
I looked at her. I didn't feel a shred of anger. My chest was entirely numb, cold, and clear.
I was looking at a thief who was playing dress-up in someone else's life.
Graham and Sophie heard our voices and walked into the bedroom.
They saw me standing there. They didn't look guilty at all; instead, their chins were lifted with a look of absolute, smug victory. They were convinced I had broken down, couldn't survive outside, and was crawling back to surrender.
Sophie crossed her arms, sneering up at me.
"If you apologize to Vanessa right now," Sophie declared, "I might allow you to keep living in the guest room."
I looked at the girl I had raised, fed, and protected for seven years. My heart finally turned to stone.
I didn't waste a single breath arguing with them. I turned around, walked down the stairs, and pulled open the front door.
Three men in uniform moving boxes stood waiting on the porch.
I stepped aside and gestured inward.
"Go straight to the master bedroom," I instructed the movers clearly. "Pack my clothes, my work equipment, and my private files. Leave everything else behind for them."
Graham's smug smile faltered instantly. He stepped out of the living room, his brow furrowing. "What is this?"
I reached into my bag, pulled out a thick, official yellow envelope, and tossed it right onto the coffee table.
"Your divorce papers," I answered.
Vanessa slowly walked down the stairs, standing right behind Graham as if his presence could shield her.
Graham scoffed, trying desperately to regain his psychological upper hand. He crossed his arms and laughed harshly.
"This is your home, Audrey. Sophie is your whole life," Graham sneered. "Where else could you possibly go?"
I looked him straight in the eyes, my voice steady and cold as ice.
"I am never coming back."
Just as the words left my mouth, the doorbell rang.
A sharp, cheerful chime that shattered the heavy tension in the room.
Graham frowned, looking deeply annoyed by the interruption. He strode over and yanked the front door open, expecting more movers.
It wasn’t another group of movers.
A professional woman in a crisp business suit stood on the porch, holding a leather folder.
Beside her stood an unfamiliar couple.
The woman smiled when she saw me.
"Mrs. Hale, the buyers are here for the final inspection."
The room went silent.
Graham stared at her.
"The buyers for what?"
The real estate agent glanced past him at the living room, then back at me.
"For this property," she answered. "If the inspection is completed today, the house will be formally handed over in ten days."
Graham’s expression went blank.
Behind him, Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs, still wrapped in my silk robe.
Sophie stood beneath the bright banner she had hung across my wall.
WELCOME HOME, MOM.
Graham suddenly laughed.
It was a short, disbelieving sound.
"This is my house," he said. "Audrey cannot sell it."
He turned toward me, clearly expecting me to admit that this was only another empty threat.
"You brought strangers here to frighten us?" he demanded. "Tell them to leave."
The buyers shifted awkwardly on the porch.
The agent tightened her grip on the folder.
I stepped aside and opened the door wider.
"Please come in."
Graham moved directly into their path.
"No one is entering my home."
I looked past him at the couple.
They had already paid their deposit.
They had already signed the agreement.
And in ten days, everything Graham believed belonged to him would belong to them.
The woman glanced toward the staircase.
"Should we begin upstairs?" she asked.
Vanessa clutched my robe more tightly around herself.
Graham’s face darkened.
"Audrey, end this ridiculous performance right now."
I looked at the colorful banner above his head.
Then I turned to the buyers.
"Yes," I said calmly.
"Start with the master bedroom."
