The next day, I headed back to our old house to retrieve my legal documents.

The locks had been completely replaced.

David pulled the door open from inside, and Emily stood in the living room wearing my house slippers.

On the wall where our family photo used to hang now hung a seaside photo of the three of them.

When Emily spotted me, she quickly tucked her feet under her skirt to hide the slippers.

"Claire, please don't take it the wrong way.

"David said no one was home, so I brought Lily over to help tidy up the place."
