Chapter 2
My obsession with tongue piercings started when I randomly scrolled past a short video one day.
The girl in the video had a tongue piercing, and when she smiled, it flashed in the light. That was insanely cool to me.
But Camillus was totally against it. "Your tongue's already super flexible. You really don't need to make it any more skilled."
"It's for decoration. And what does flexibility have to do with it?" I shot back.
"It might... affect something..." Camillus blushed, trailing off without finishing.
But I still went and got it done behind his back.
When we kissed, I'd purposely rub my tongue piercing against his tongue, making him shudder and pull away, his eyes all teary.
After that, he didn't kiss me as much anymore. Every time we kissed, he'd avoid my tongue piercing.
He used to practically glue his lips to mine, but now our goodnight kisses were a quick peck on the forehead. He wouldn't even touch my lips.
At first, I thought he was mad at me for not listening to him, but after watching him for a couple of days, I realized that wasn't it.
He was still super nice to me, maybe more possessive than before. Ever since a friend of mine confessed to me a few days ago, Camillus had been glued to my side like my own personal shadow.
Speaking of that man who confessed to me, I didn't even know his name. He was good-looking, but not my type, so I turned him down right away.
But somehow, Camillus found out about it, and from that day on, he never left my side. He followed me to class, to the supermarket, and waited outside the bathroom for me.
"Don't you have to work?" I asked.
"I work remotely," he replied.
I glanced at his empty hands. "So, you sign documents with your brainwaves now?"
He didn't reply to me.
Anyway, after I got my tongue piercing, Camillus wanted to kiss me so bad, but couldn't bring himself to do it.
To not kiss me was pure agony, but he never breathed a word of it. He swallowed it down, held himself in check with such force that I could tell he felt like something was breaking inside. Even his eyes were rimmed in creepy crimson.
I put up with it for half a month, but I couldn't take it anymore.
One night, he walked me back to my dorm and lingered at the door, his eyes burned with restrained desire.
I could tell he wanted to kiss me, but every time he got close, he'd pull away like he'd been burned. So, I grabbed him by the collar, yanked him over, and kissed him.
The moment our lips met, his whole body went stiff, and then started trembling. I was about to deepen the kiss when he suddenly let out a stifled groan, his eyes turning red as big tears started rolling down his cheeks.
I was startled and quickly let go of him. "What's wrong? Does it hurt?"
He covered his mouth, big tears plopping down, his voice weak and raspy. "It hurts like hell."
"Huh?"
"Your tongue piercing is pure silver. Kissing you with that thing burns like crazy."
I froze, and then it finally hit me. I'd gotten a pure silver tongue piercing to prevent infection, and vampires couldn't stand silver. That was like Vampire 101. I couldn't believe I forgot something so basic.
That big idiot. He'd rather suffer in silence for half a month than tell me what he was feeling.
Camillus covered his face in resignation, too torn to look at me, craving me with everything he had, but knowing he couldn't touch me.
I looked at his red nose and tearful eyes, took a deep breath, and asked, "You're a vampire, right?"
He froze, and then nodded slowly, almost timidly, like a creature of the night caught in a beam of light, his lashes still quivering.
"When did you figure it out?" he asked quietly.
"Just now, when you teared up because my silver tongue piercing burned you," I said.
"So, it wasn't because of all those weird slip-ups before?"
"You had so many weird moments. I thought you were super sensitive and kind of dramatic."
He went quiet, his lips pressed into a thin line. After a long pause, he finally asked, "Aren't you scared?"
"Scared of what? That you'll bite me? You've been dodging my kisses for half a month. With you being such a wimp, what's there to be afraid of? Am I right, big mosquito?"
He couldn't help but let out a little laugh, but quickly tried to hold it back, looking at me nervously. "So, do you still want to be with me?"
I didn't say anything. Instead, I unscrewed my tongue piercing and let the tiny silver bead rest in my palm, glinting under the streetlight. I tucked it into my pocket, then gently cupped his face and kissed him, slow and serious.
His lips were cool and soft. At first, he was stiff as a board, but then, slowly, he started to kiss me back. I felt the sharp tip of his fang graze my tongue, a flash of pain, but no harm.
