The next morning, Victor went to see Peter, who lived down the road.

Peter was in his eighties, hard of hearing, but his mind was sharp. He was the oldest resident in town. He knew the Sherman family history better than anyone.

"You mean that Mike boy?" Peter squinted, thinking for a moment. "Your dad brought him back from town. Said he was a friend's kid. Parents dead, no kin to take him in.

"You were three that year? No, you went missing at three. Whether Mike came before or after... I can't rightly recall."
