Chapter 1
I was trying on bras at the mall, wanting to ask my bestie, Emily Lewis, which one looked better.
But I accidentally called Lucas instead.
"How's this style? Does it make my boobs look good?" I asked.
Holding my phone, I took a selfie from above and excitedly pushed my chest out a little.
But there was no response from the other end.
Only the sound of uneven breathing came through.
Weird. That was nothing like how my best friend usually reacted.
Why isn't she gassing me up and calling me a goddess?
"Looks good." The next second, a cool, magnetic male voice came through.
I froze on the spot.
Then, an aloof and strikingly handsome face appeared on the screen.
I hung up the video call in a panic, my breath catching in my throat.
Oh my god that was Lucas Lewis?
Heart pounding, I fumbled to unlock my phone again.
I tapped on the top chat.
There it was, the video call from just a minute ago.
It showed my bestie's profile picture.
But the display name was totally wrong.
It was [LJ].
Not [My Sweet Emmy].
Then it hit me, last night at the party, Emily and her brother Lucas lost a game and had to swap each other's profile pics for 24 hours as punishment.
Oh crap.
I'm so dead.
Just thinking about how I was striking poses in nothing but my bra, shamelessly asking if I looked hot, this is peak social death.
Ready to cry but holding it in, my hands shaking, I shot a message to Lucas.
I wrote: [Sorry, Lucas. I meant to call Emmy just now.]
I added: [But you guys swapped profile pics, and I accidentally called you instead.]
I sent a crying emoji.
He didn't reply for what felt like forever.
I gripped my phone, on the verge of tears.
I was always a little scared of Lucas.
Sure, he was Emily's brother, and sometimes we'd have dinner or hang out at parties together.
But I could never really get close to him.
He was tall, almost six foot three.
And he had a face so handsome it was unfair.
Just standing there, he could make the whole room tense.
Plus, he was super aloof.
He barely spoke, and half the time he looked like he was annoyed at the world.
Even though the first time I met him, I was totally floored by how good-looking he was.
But whenever I was around him, I was always super cautious, tiptoeing like I might mess up at any second, never daring to step out of line.
And here I am.
I'd totally screwed up.
Lucas replied: [Oh.]
While I was still freaking out, Lucas finally replied.
Staring at that single, deadpan word, I fell silent.
That was even colder than I expected.
But then I pictured Lucas's usual icy poker face, and honestly, it checked out.
Lucas added: [Got it.]
Just those two words, and suddenly all my worries melted away.
Thank god.
He really didn't seem to care.
I breathed a sigh of relief and didn't bother to explain any more.
That was that.
I was so embarrassed I couldn't even think about buying a bra anymore.
I changed back into my clothes, bolted out of the fitting room, and made a beeline for home.
In the dead of night, I suddenly shot up in bed.
Wait, did Lucas actually reply to me back then?
He had said, "Looks good."
Why would he say that?
I really did call the wrong person, I thought I was talking to Emily.
But he knew exactly who I was.
My mind kept replaying it over and over.
It was the middle of the night.
I couldn't sleep at all, those words just kept echoing in my head.
Looks good.
Looks good.
Looks good.
Lucas was usually cold to me, his face icy and his words sharp enough to draw blood.
How could he have said "Looks good" in that gentle, low, restrained voice, like he was holding something back?
