Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
The iron restraint snapped shut around my wrist, the sound echoing through the Snowridge lobby like a gunshot.
“Until the investigation into the missing seal is complete, you will remain in custody,” Rowan said.
His voice was cold, a sound I once associated with safety, now merely a blade.
I looked at the man fastening the lock—my husband, my mate, and the Alpha I had spent five years serving in every way but name.
Behind him stood Elena, draped in my mother’s coat, her fingers adorned with my family’s heirloom ring.
The silver band bore the crest of a wolf howling at a crescent moon. It wasn’t just jewelry; it was a birthright.
Seeing it on her finger felt like watching someone wear my own skin.
“The Alpha’s Seal was found in your room, Anya,” Rowan continued, refusing to meet my eyes. “The pack demands justice. Leaving quietly is the only way to protect what remains of your reputation.”
The lobby was packed with Snowridge families—the same ones I had hand-fed through the worst winters, the same ones I had personally nursed through the fever outbreaks.
Now, they wouldn’t even meet my gaze. They smelled like fear and opportunism.
“A thief,” someone hissed. “Traitor,” another echoed.
I ignored them. I didn’t look at the crowd; I looked at Rowan.
I didn’t plead. I didn’t cry.
I simply stood there, my back straight, my posture radiating a calm that made the wolves shift uncomfortably.
“Show me the vault record,” I said, my voice steady, cutting through the murmurs.
“Then check the records.”
Rowan’s hand froze as it reached for his belt. The air in the room grew heavy.
“There will be no further review,” he stated, his jaw tight.
So, it was a performance. He hadn't brought me here for an investigation; he had brought me here to execute a sentence he and Elena had written over dinner.
I walked toward them. The guards tensed, but I didn’t stop until I was inches from Elena. She shrunk back, her smug smile faltering under my gaze.
“The ring,” I said, my voice barely a whisper, yet it rang out clearly. “Take it off, Elena.”
“Rowan, she’s attacking me!” she shrieked.
Rowan stepped forward to shield her, but he was too late.
I moved with the precision of a predator. I seized her wrist, not with hate, but with the chilling detachment of a Queen reclaiming her territory.
The moment my skin touched the silver band, a faint warmth spread through the metal.
Elena’s fingers loosened. The ring slipped free and fell into my palm.
She stared at it, her face turning pale.
The silence that followed was absolute.
I held the ring up, the wolf crest glistening under the harsh lobby lights.
It belonged to me, and for the first time in months, I felt the hum of the old power—the power Rowan had tried to bury.
“Remove her,” Rowan ordered, his face pale with shock.
I didn't fight the guards. I closed my hand around the ring and walked toward the transport truck parked in the snowstorm.
Beside me were the others: Mrs. Bell, clutching a failing oxygen tank; two mothers shielding their shivering children; and a young wolf with a crushed leg.
These were the ‘excess’—the wolves Snowridge considered too expensive to keep.
As the truck engine groaned into life, Rowan stood in the doorway, staring at me.
He looked like a man who had just thrown away his compass in the middle of a blizzard.
“The northern road is buried,” the driver muttered, shivering. “No one survives a night out there.”
I looked at the terrified faces huddled around me, then at the ring in my palm.
My mother’s ghost had whispered to me in the library last night—about a place the pack had forgotten. A place with its own heart, hidden deep in the woods.
“Don’t take us to the transit station,” I commanded, my voice cold enough to freeze the breath in our lungs.
“Where to?” the driver asked, terrified.
I pointed toward the dark, jagged silhouette of St. Jude’s Academy, the building Rowan had abandoned to rot.
“To the place that doesn't need an Alpha.”
As the truck turned away from the warmth of the pack, I felt the ring pulse against my skin. It wasn't just metal anymore. It was a key.
And I was finally ready to see what it unlocked.
