Chapter 3
Who could've guessed that Jonathan, with all his charm and success, was so blind and cold-hearted underneath it all?
He ran a company worth hundreds of millions, but let his assistant get away with anything—even treating me, his own wife, like I was invisible.
As soon as Rebecca spotted Jonathan, her attitude flipped like a switch.
All that swagger disappeared, and she instantly morphed into a delicate, wronged damsel.
Rebecca whimpered, "Mr. Grant, do you know why I ended up so depressed? It was because Emily Rivers bullied me back in high school. I nearly tried to kill myself because of her.
"When I saw her at the airport today, all those painful memories just hit me again. So I brought her home, just wanting an apology, but she refused to say a single word—so stubborn! You have to stand up for me, Mr. Grant!"
Her voice was sugary and coy, nothing like how an assistant should talk to her boss. It honestly made my skin crawl.
Rebecca rolled up her sleeve, showing Jonathan the scars on her arm—proof of her past suicide attempt.
And she made it clear—she blamed it all on Emily.
Jonathan didn't even bother to look at the girl out on the balcony. He just hovered over Rebecca, fussing over her like she was the only one in the world.
"School bullies deserve whatever's coming to them. Rebecca was right to teach her a lesson!" Jonathan said coldly.
I looked at Jonathan in shock. "She beat someone to death, and you think that's okay?"
Jonathan brushed me off, sounding impatient. "So what if it's your sister? Just sign a letter of forgiveness, I'll throw you some cash, and that's the end of it."
Just like last time, he thought money could fix everything, even sneaking that letter into the contract to trick me into signing.
They figured I'd let them off the hook, just because of the money.
Thinking about it, I couldn't help but laugh out of anger. "Jonathan, do you really think money can fix everything? Even buy back your sister's life?"
His eyes widened, spittle flying. "You fool, it was your sister who died!
"Isn't it all about the money for you? Three hundred thousand not enough? Fine, one and a half million, three million—everyone has a price!" Jonathan snapped.
I shook the ice off my body. "Save it for yourself. I'm not taking a single cent from you."
I walked slowly into the room, leaving the girl sprawled out on the balcony.
Jonathan looked at me, totally clueless.
Rebecca sneered, claiming the cold must have addled my brain.
I merely smiled, offering no explanation, content to watch their performance.
Just then, commotion erupted at the entrance. A girl in purple slid into the room.
"Natalie, are you okay? I saw them picking on you. These people are monsters—totally ruthless," Emily called out, worry all over her face.
After saying that, Emily pulled me into a warm hug, wrapping her coat around me.
My heart lurched with a mix of fear and relief. I'd told her not to come back, yet here she was, secretly returned.
But once I saw she was safe, the tension drained from me. I hugged her, crying with relief and happiness.
Every eye in the room shifted from Emily to the balcony, where a naked girl lay frozen solid.
Rebecca went pale as a sheet and dropped to the floor, stammering, "Who... who are you? What the hell is going on?"
Jonathan stood frozen, panic flooding his eyes. "Emily? If you're here... who is that on the balcony?"
At that moment, his phone rang sharply, shattering the stunned silence.
