Chapter 3

The next day, Marcus told me Claire was incredibly busy preparing for the wedding. The scale of it was almost as grand as ours had been.
I nodded thoughtfully.
She was that busy, yet she still arranged for private catering to deliver three meals a day to me.
She really had both my life and Nolan's perfectly managed.
On the day of the wedding, Marcus brought me to the banquet hall of a luxury hotel in Boston.
Before the ceremony started, we sat in the furthest corner. Not far away, Claire and Nolan were walking arm in arm, surrounded by groomsmen.
"I remember Claire throwing a wedding this grand with Adrian back then," someone laughed. "Didn't expect Nolan to be lucky enough to marry such a beautiful bride too."
Hearing my name, Nolan tightened his grip on Claire's hand.
Claire quickly explained, "Adrian and I are already divorced. Today is my wedding. Let's not bring up the past."
The groomsmen laughed.
"Nolan is young, handsome, and talented. How could Adrian ever compare?"
"Claire, we're leaving Nolan in your hands. Don't let him down."
Claire smiled sweetly, just like she had when she made her vows to me.
"Don't worry. I won't let him down, and he won't let me down."
My eyes darkened.
Marcus ground his teeth. "What the hell are they talking about? The homewrecker is acting like the ultimate winner."
Nearby, someone cheered, "On such a great day, Nolan and Claire should give us a kiss!"
The groomsmen chimed in. "Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"
Nolan looked deeply into Claire's eyes, his expression perfectly calculated.
Amidst the cheering, Claire reached up to cup his jaw, stood on her tiptoes, and pressed a light kiss to his lips.
The crowd erupted.
But to my ears, that lively, deafening room was dead silent.
She couldn't keep her heart faithful, and now, even her body no longer belonged to our marriage.
I curled my lips in a mocking smirk.
Fortunately, so much of my memory had already faded. I didn't feel nearly as much agony as I would have before.
Right then, my phone screen lit up.
An airline app sent a boarding notification.
"Marcus, it's time for me to go."
Marcus pulled me into a tight hug, his eyes red.
"Go. Leave all this filthy garbage behind and build your empire. I'll be waiting to see you at the absolute top."
"As for this place, I've got a massive gift prepared for them."
"I'm off."
I smiled and patted his shoulder, not really caring what kind of gift he had planned.
Because in half an hour, every memory of my love for Claire would be permanently erased.
Dragging my suitcase, I walked out the doors of the banquet hall. Just as I turned to leave, my footsteps paused. I glanced back through the half-open glass doors.
Claire and Nolan, hand in hand, happened to look toward the entrance. They caught a glimpse of my silhouette, and panic instantly flashed across Claire's face.
The lights in the banquet hall dimmed.
Claire and Nolan stood in the center of the stage, gazing sweetly at each other after exchanging rings.
The guests cheered, urging them to kiss.
Suddenly, a massive projection lit up the banquet hall walls, and a huge banner dropped from the ceiling.
It read in bold letters:
LIARS AND HOMEWRECKERS
Marcus stood under the banner, raising a megaphone with a cold sneer.
"Wishing you two frauds and homewreckers a long and happy life—if this wedding even makes it to the end of the vows!"
Nolan's face turned deathly pale. He looked at Claire in a panic.
Recognizing Marcus, Claire's fury flared.
"What nonsense are you spewing?! Adrian and I are divorced! Nolan isn't a homewrecker!"
Marcus scoffed.
"You want to play the righteous saint while doing the dirtiest things imaginable. You couldn't let go of your ex-husband, yet you threw a wedding for another man, and you demanded that Adrian wait around to remarry you. Do you have any idea how much hell he's been through these past three days?"
Claire's eyes turned icy.
"That's none of your business. I gave Adrian the pill. There's no way he remembers any of this."
"You idiot. That drug doesn't cause instant amnesia. It takes three full days to completely wipe out his memories of the person he loves. Everything you did over the last three days? He saw every single second of it."
Marcus tilted his chin up, glaring at her with pure contempt.
"And there's one more thing you probably don't know. The lead developer of that project was Adrian. Your ex-husband."
Marcus's voice boomed through the hall.
"The antidote was never finished. Adrian has completely forgotten you, and there is absolutely zero chance he will ever remarry you."
"Now, you can enjoy your new life with your man in peace."
