The next morning, Kyle was nowhere to be seen.

I walked into the dining room and saw a glass of milk and a sandwich waiting for me on the table. Next to them was a note, covered in his bold handwriting.

[Eat up, babe. I'll be back soon. Don't miss me too much, okay?]

At the end, he'd drawn a lopsided smiley face.

I stared at the note, my fingers brushing over it. A sweet, unfamiliar feeling washed over me, something I couldn't quite put into words.

I was still lost in thought when the doorbell rang.
