Chapter 1
I woke to darkness pressing against my chest like a physical weight, my wolf Luna whimpering deep within my consciousness. The sensation was wrong—fundamentally, terrifyingly wrong. In ten years of being mated to Amir, I'd never experienced this hollow ache that seemed to gnaw at the very core of our bond.
The sheets beside me were cold. Again.
Sitting up slowly, I pressed a hand to my stomach as another wave of nausea rolled through me. Luna paced restlessly in my mind, her distress bleeding into my own awareness like poison seeping through cracks in stone. Something was fracturing inside us, something sacred and irreplaceable.
"Where is he?" I whispered to the empty room, though I already knew the answer would only deepen the growing pit of dread in my stomach.
The past month had been a blur of Amir's excuses—late pack meetings that ran until dawn, urgent territory disputes that required his immediate attention, sudden emergencies that always seemed to occur when I needed him most. My Alpha had become a ghost haunting our own home, present in body but absent in every way that mattered.
I padded barefoot to his office, Luna's anxiety driving me forward despite the voice in my head warning me to turn back. The mahogany door stood slightly ajar, and I could see the soft glow of his tablet screen illuminating the leather chair where he'd been working—or pretending to work—until the early hours.
My fingers trembled as I pushed the door open wider. The familiar scent of his cologne lingered in the air, mixed with something else—something floral and distinctly feminine that made my wolf bare her teeth in warning.
The tablet lay forgotten on his desk, screen still active. I shouldn't look. I knew I shouldn't look. But Luna was clawing at my consciousness now, her desperation overriding my rational thoughts as I reached for the device.
The first message hit me like a physical blow:
*"Can't wait to see you tonight. The safe house feels empty without you."*
My hands shook as I scrolled upward, each message a fresh knife wound to my already bleeding heart:
*"You mean everything to me, Amir. More than she ever could."*
*"I love you too, Chandler. You have to know that."*
*"When will you finally choose me over duty?"*
The tablet slipped from my nerveless fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor. The sound seemed to echo through the empty house like a death knell, and I doubled over as the first real pain of our weakening mate bond tore through my chest.
Chandler Ross. His personal assistant. The she-wolf with the sweet smile and professional demeanor who'd been working late with my mate, traveling to pack conferences, organizing his schedule with such dedicated efficiency.
Luna howled in my mind, a sound of pure anguish that made my vision blur. Ten years. Ten years of building this pack together, of sharing dreams and fears and the sacred intimacy of a true mate bond. Ten years reduced to secret messages and lies.
I heard his footsteps on the stairs—heavy, familiar, completely unaware that his world was about to shatter along with mine. My wolf wanted to shift, to tear and rend and make him feel even a fraction of the agony currently ripping through my soul. Instead, I forced myself to stand, to breathe, to prepare for the confrontation that would either save us or destroy us completely.
Amir appeared in the doorway, his dark hair disheveled, still wearing yesterday's clothes. He looked tired, guilty, and when his eyes fell on the tablet at my feet, I watched his face drain of all color.
"Rosa, I can explain—"
"Can you?" My voice came out steadier than I felt, though Luna's rage was making my hands shake. "Because I'd really love to hear how you explain telling another woman you love her while your mate—your fated mate—lies awake wondering why our bond feels like it's dying."
He stepped into the room, and I caught that floral scent again, stronger now. Her scent. On his clothes, his skin, probably in his hair. My wolf snarled, and I had to grip the desk edge to keep from launching myself at him.
"It's not what you think—"
"It's exactly what I think!" The words exploded out of me, ten years of trust and devotion crystallizing into pure fury. "You're having an affair with your assistant. You've been lying to me for months, sneaking around behind my back while I've been here trying to hold our family together!"
Amir's shoulders sagged, and for a moment, he looked older than his thirty-four years. When he finally met my eyes, I saw something that made my heart clench despite everything—genuine remorse.
"You're right," he whispered, the admission falling between us like a stone into still water. "God, Rosa, you're right, and I'm so sorry. I never meant for this to happen."
The confession should have brought relief, but instead, it sent another wave of bond-pain through my chest. Luna whimpered, pressing closer to my consciousness as if seeking comfort I couldn't provide.
"How long?" I asked, though part of me didn't want to know.
"Three months." His voice broke on the words. "It started as nothing—just conversations, shared work, but then... I don't know how it happened, Rosa. I swear I don't."
Three months. Three months of lies and deception while I'd been planning pack events, caring for Joshua, believing in us. Three months of him coming home to me with her scent still clinging to his skin.
"I'll end it," he said suddenly, stepping closer with desperate eyes. "Right now, today. I'll transfer her to another pack, whatever you want. Rosa, please—we have Joshua to think about. We have the pack. I can't lose you over this mistake."
Mistake. As if betraying our sacred mate bond was something as simple as forgetting to take out the trash.
But as I looked at him—really looked at him—I saw the man I'd fallen in love with in college. The Alpha who'd helped me build this pack from nothing. The father of my child. And despite Luna's protests, despite the agony in my chest, I found myself wavering.
"You'll really end it?" I whispered, hating myself for the hope creeping into my voice.
He nodded frantically. "I swear on the Moon Goddess herself. Rosa, you're my mate, my Luna. What I did was unforgivable, but please—give me one chance to make this right."
I closed my eyes, feeling the weight of our shared history, our son sleeping upstairs, our pack that depended on us both. When I opened them again, Amir was watching me with desperate intensity.
"One chance," I said finally, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "But Amir—if you betray me again, if you so much as look at her wrong, I will end this bond myself. Do you understand me?"
Relief flooded his features as he nodded. "I understand. Thank you, Rosa. I won't waste this chance, I promise."
As he pulled me into his arms, I tried to ignore Luna's warning growls, tried to believe that love could overcome betrayal, that our bond was strong enough to survive this fracture.
I had no idea how wrong I was.
