Chapter 4

I forced a smile.

I just let the messages pile up, ignoring them all.

I swiped and shut my phone off completely.

The plane sliced through the clouds, sunlight gilding the wings in gold.

Back then, I would've been super excited, taking a pic to send to Ryan.

I loved telling him about the bright flowers blooming outside my building.

And the tasty spaghetti at the cafeteria, and the kittens sunbathing in the yard.

Those were my happiest moments. I always wanted to share them with him.

Ryan gave me a tired look, his voice worn out. "Emily, I'm buried…
