Chapter 4

On the first day, we made it through by dividing up the last food ration bars.

Each of us got half, forcing it down with nothing but spit. Water was even scarcer. Only three bottles left, so we could barely have a mouthful each day.

Raul broke his food ration bar in half and handed it to me. "Here."

"No," I said, refusing to take it.

"You saved my life." Raul pushed the bar into my hand. "I owe you."

I looked at his pale face, took the bar, and without hesitation passed it on to Lia.
