Chapter 2
Then Chloe quickly explained, "Don't get the wrong idea. Ethan is my doctor. I brought my kid, Luna, in for a consultation."
I hummed softly, and the next second, the person on the other end changed.
Ethan's voice sounded a bit anxious and tense as he said, "Honey?
"Sorry, things got a little hectic at the hospital, and I missed the time.
"It will take a while for me to finish. Why don't you come to the hospital to find me?"
Then I made my way to the hospital.
Through the glass window of the ward, I saw Ethan sitting by the bed, entertaining a kid.
Ethan was handsome and super friendly, so every kid in the pediatric department liked him.
As soon as they saw him, they'd get all excited and call out, "Ethan!"
I peeked in a bit more, only to find that Chloe was sitting across from Ethan.
The two of them held one of Luna Morgan's hands, and the atmosphere was full of warmth and happiness.
If Chloe hadn't broken up with Ethan six years ago, maybe this scene would have turned into a real family of three.
My chest felt so tight, it was hard to breathe.
When I opened the door and entered, Ethan's face stiffened for a moment, and he discreetly let go of Luna's hand.
Luna, in the hospital bed, grabbed his hand suddenly.
She said in her sweet, childish voice, "Ethan, can you be my daddy?"
Ethan's expression froze.
Chloe awkwardly stuffed a piece of bread into Luna's mouth and looked at me.
She said, "Don't take it to heart. She just says whatever comes to mind."
I gave a wry smile.
I couldn't really ignore it.
But I was not childish enough to argue with a four-year-old.
The special patient Ethan mentioned turned out to be Chloe's daughter.
Luna was born with a congenital heart condition, and her ex-husband divorced her because of it.
Chloe had been all over the place with Luna, looking for doctors who could help them.
After hearing that Ethan's hospital was top-notch for heart cases, she finally decided to return.
It was just a coincidence, but I couldn't help but notice.
Afterwards, Ethan stayed by Chloe's side, helping her and making sure Luna went through all the necessary checkups.
Before I noticed it, it was six o'clock in the evening.
But I hadn't completed a single thing from my to-do list.
I walked over to Ethan and gently tugged at his white coat.
I said softly, "Ethan, it's late..."
Ethan buried his head in a pile of documents without looking up.
He said, "Honey, sorry, but Luna still has a few more tests to finish up..."
I pressed my lips together, looking annoyed.
I said, "You promised you'd accompany me today, and you took time off. Your coworkers could handle this..."
Ethan snapped, "Nora, stop!"
His voice suddenly shot up.
I was stunned, my whole body going numb. In the five years we were together, he'd never once raised his voice at me.
Realizing he'd gone too far, he looked apologetic for a moment.
But he still insisted, "Luna's case is very special. At present, there are barely any successful treatments like this in the country.
"How could I just let anyone else deal with it?
"This is a matter of life and death, Nora. Don't make a fuss about it, okay?"
The hurt hit me hard, and my throat felt like it was stuffed with cotton.
I said in a hoarse voice, "I didn't let you handle it casually. I just think asking a nurse for help with these examinations is okay. There's no need to accompany them all the way..."
Chloe suddenly walked into the office, looking at us, and said, "Nora's right, Ethan. You have helped us a lot.
"The hospital's already short on beds. I'm really grateful you managed to secure a bed for Luna.
"I'll take care of the rest myself.
"I heard today's your fifth anniversary? Congratulations!
"Hope I get to celebrate at your wedding soon."
Ethan frowned for a moment at Chloe's well-wishes.
After saying that, Chloe closed the door, walking out.
The room was silent, just the two of us left.
After a long while, Ethan sighed, took off his white coat, and walked out.
Seeing me not moving, he looked at me, exasperated. "Well, I'll go with you. Come on," he said.
I said, "Forget it."
Without another word, I turned around to leave, feeling the sting of hurt swelling in my chest.
Ethan grabbed me, trying to appease me.
He coaxed gently, "Honey, I'm sorry."
After all, I had been in love with him for twelve years.
My heart would just melt every time he apologized to me.
Then Ethan took me to see a movie.
When we were waiting, he kept texting.
I glanced at his screen and found he was texting the nurse, asking her to be extra attentive to Luna.
My chest skipped a beat.
I forced myself not to read too much into it. Ethan had always been this attentive with every kid. It was just how he was as a doctor.
Halfway through the movie, his phone rang out loud, suddenly breaking the quiet.
I stared at him in surprise.
Before, Ethan always silenced his phone every time we watched a movie.
He was afraid of disturbing others.
So why was he acting so out of character today?
