Chapter 4
I twisted my wrist, grabbed Julia by the neck, and hoisted her up. Then I slapped her hard again.
I sneered, "The stock tanks?
"You honestly believe the internet won't be belting out my victory anthem tomorrow after the ex-wife obliterates the evil mistress tonight?
"The only reason I kept you around was to use you for the divorce.
"Now that I've finally gotten rid of that piece of trash, Frank, what makes you think you can still look me in the eye?"
Julia trembled, hugging herself tightly, afraid I'd hit her again and terrified she might accidentally expose herself.
But the hatred in her eyes made me wonder if she still had some deadly card up her sleeve.
But in the end, she didn't say a word.
I let out a dismissive scoff, crouched down next to her, unclasped the necklace from her neck, and gave her cheek a light tap.
I said, "If I don't want something, I'll toss it out myself.
"You messed up my stuff. Let Frank know he's going to pay for this."
As soon as I finished speaking, the doors to the party hall swung open.
Frank strode briskly in.
He gave me a quick look, then walked over to Julia and helped her up.
He scolded her in a low voice, "That's enough. Go back."
Julia's face was streaked with tears, but her makeup somehow stayed perfect, making her look vulnerable and pitiful.
If this had happened before, Frank would've already started blaming me.
But this time, he ignored Julia completely and just stared straight at the necklace in my hand.
When I saw him finally catch on to what was really going down tonight, I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh.
I said, "Whatever, isn't she the one acting all depressed? Just take her to the hospital."
I grabbed my phone from the waiter, nodded at a few familiar faces, and headed out without looking back.
I was about to get in the car when Frank chased after me.
He grabbed my wrist and said, "Kara, really, I didn't know."
Since Julia crashed into our marriage, tonight was the first time he left his side chick standing there and ran to explain things to me.
Honestly, it made me sick.
I brushed his hand off, totally indifferent. I said, "It doesn't matter to me anymore. I was planning to trash it anyway."
Frank's face went pale in an instant.
He said, "Kara, you gotta believe me. I swear I had no idea.
"You gave me this necklace. It's mine now, so let me deal with it, alright?"
I just looked at him, totally unfazed.
With a hint of sarcasm, I said, "That necklace has always been locked away in your safe.
"Frank, tell me: who could get into your safe without you knowing?"
Frank kept his mouth shut, unable to come up with a single word.
I opened the car door and slid inside.
As the car slowly pulled out of the parking lot, I caught a glimpse of Frank in the rearview mirror, just standing there frozen.
He looked genuinely lonely.
I shook my head and said to Lucas up front, "You know, back when I was struggling to give birth, and he finally bothered to show up at the hospital the next day, he didn't even look this shaken.
"So why's he acting like it's the end of the world over a stupid necklace?"
Lucas, cool as ever, just adjusted his glasses.
He said, "Ms. Nash, maybe Mr. Goodman thinks that if you go ahead and destroy that necklace, the one that means so much to both of you, then that's it. There's no chance left for you two."
That gave me chills, and I couldn't help but tease him, "Lucas, you really need to stop binging those romance novels.
"Seriously, reading all that stuff is just gonna rot your brain."
I handed the necklace to Lucas and told him to have it destroyed.
The next morning, I had the legal department send a formal legal notice to the Goodman Group.
It stated that Julia had stolen my jewelry last night, and I demanded that Frank pay me 15 million as compensation for emotional damages.
The legal director was left scratching his head, totally confused.
Last night's events had made it to the news, and every headline claimed the jewelry was Frank's.
Honestly, the chances of actually getting that money were slim to none.
But he didn't bother asking; he just went ahead and did what I said.
Within two hours of sending out the legal notice, 15 million landed straight in my personal account.
I just gave a cold laugh.
