Chapter 5
Series 1 Chapter 5
The ballroom was a sea of silk, diamonds, and forced smiles.
At the center of it all stood Celeste. She was holding court with the city's elite.
Pinned to her chest was Margaret’s vintage sapphire brooch. It sparkled under the chandelier like a stolen trophy.
"It’s not just jewelry," Celeste told the investors, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. "It’s a symbol of the quiet work women do for their families. Nora… she simply couldn't handle the pressure."
Nearby, Graham stood like a king. He was swirling a glass of expensive scotch.
He was speaking directly to Arthur Sterling, the billionaire investor.
"Celeste was the one my mother truly trusted," Graham lied smoothly. "As for my wife… it’s a tragedy. She has completely lost her mind."
I stepped out of the shadows.
I wasn't wearing a borrowed dress. I wore a sharp, tailored black suit. I didn't look like a broken wife. I looked like a financial assassin.
The chatter in the room died instantly.
Graham spotted me. His eyes flashed with cruel satisfaction. He thought I was here to cry. He thought I was here to give him the public spectacle he needed.
He immediately signaled the security guards.
"Nora," Graham sighed loudly into the microphone. The whole room could hear his mocking pity. "I warned you about coming here. You are unwell."
Two huge security guards surged forward to grab me.
I didn't scream. I didn't fight back. I stood perfectly still.
"Stop," Arthur Sterling suddenly commanded. The billionaire looked at me with sharp interest.
The guards froze. Graham’s smile faltered for a second.
"Let her speak," Sterling said coldly.
I looked straight at Graham. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
"Graham is right," I said. My voice was calm, cutting through the silence like a scalpel. "I am unstable. It is very destabilizing to discover your husband is a thief."
The crowd gasped.
Celeste turned pale. "Security! Get her out of here! She's having a psychotic break!"
"I have the medical logs from the hospital, Celeste," I said, my eyes locking onto the brooch on her chest. "Margaret was in a coma the week you claim she gifted you that sapphire. That’s not a gift. That’s grand larceny."
Graham’s face turned purple with rage. He lunged for the microphone.
"She is a liar!" Graham boomed, his voice echoing with desperate authority. "This is a grieving woman's delusion! She has no proof!"
He looked at the crowd. He was ready to deliver the final, crushing blow to my reputation.
I smiled. It was the cold, merciless smile of an auditor who had already won.
"You’re right, Graham," I said softly.
I raised a small black remote in my hand.
"I shouldn't make accusations without proof," I said, pointing the remote directly at him. "So I brought yours."
I pressed the button.
Click.
Behind Graham and Celeste, the massive forty-foot projector screen flickered to life.
Graham turned around.
His smug smile vanished instantly. The blood completely drained from his face.
The entire ballroom erupted into a deafening roar of horror.
Celeste looked up at the screen and let out a piercing scream.
