Chapter 4

After I got in the car, my mind went fuzzy and I drifted off.

"You got her here just in time," the doctor said. "If you'd been any later, she could have been in real trouble."

As I woke up, I caught bits of the doctor and Elias talking.

I realized my wound was infected, and I'd come down with a serious fever.

"Here, drink some water," Elias said, hurrying over with a cup as soon as he saw I was awake.

Seeing Elias taking care of me, I couldn't help but mock myself inwardly.

Only my family loved me…
