Chapter 1
I was an overworked office employee, working long hours every single day.
When I nearly dropped dead from exhaustion for the ninth time, words suddenly appeared before my eyes.
[Wow, the female lead rejected the CEO again. She really had backbone.]
[Yeah! Even the newest iPhone hidden inside the nine hundred and ninety-nine roses couldn't move her.]
My eyes lit up. I rushed to the trash can and dug out the gifts.
More words appeared, filled with jealousy.
[This random character sure got lucky. But she can't always catch opportunities like this, unless she sticks close to the male lead.]
I smacked my forehead. What a brilliant idea.
The next day, I resigned on the spot and applied for a secretary position.
Words exploded with mockery.
[The male lead is loyal. He only hired men as his secretaries. This random character really overestimated herself.]
On the interview day, I walked into the CEO's office with an eggplant tied around my waist, hidden in my clothes.
I said, "I heard you only hire men here. That's fine. I have gender identity disorder. I can stop being a woman and be a man."
*****
Inside the conference room, everyone was so tense one could cut the air with a knife.
All eyes were glued to the man sitting at the head of the table.
Jonah Callahan lifted his eyelids, his gaze cold and unreadable.
"If that's all you've got, you can get the hell out of my office right now," he said, his voice icy.
I grinned, not giving a damn.
"Mr. Callahan, you're losing now, right? Don't even know how to chase a woman?" I said.
All the HR folks drew a sharp breath.
Words flashed by, freaking out.
[Oh my god. This random character is doomed.]
Jonah's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Go on."
I pointed at everyone else. "You sure you want them to hear?"
Jonah swept the room with a frosty glare.
Everyone shot me a bitter look before shuffling out, defeated.
I adjusted the eggplant strapped to my waist.
I said, "Hiring me comes with three perks. I can stir up some catfights, be your romantic strategist, and even let you vent all your anger on me."
Jonah was silent for a moment, then nodded.
"I get the first two, but what do you mean by letting me vent my anger on you?" he asked.
I walked right up to him and fished out every hundred-dollar bill from his wallet.
I said, "Comparisons matter. Miss Batton treats money like it's trash, but me? I'm all about the cash.
"Go ahead, humiliate me with money. I'll love it."
Words flashed, full of fury.
[Wow. She's not even trying to hide it. Is this girl really that shameless about chasing cash?]
[This random character must have a death wish. Does she really think Mr. Callahan is her personal ATM? Picking up scraps is one thing, but she's actually doing it in front of the male lead.]
Jonah grabbed the bills, weighed them in his hand, and tossed them at my face.
"As you wish," he said.
I stumbled back, but I couldn't wipe the grin off my face. "Thanks, Mr. Callahan."
Jonah let out a long breath and strode out of the room.
"30 thousand dollars a month. Start tomorrow," he called over his shoulder.
I nodded eagerly. "Got it."
The words froze for a second, then started flashing past again.
[Holy crap! Throwing money at her? That's pure genius. This random character is a total legend.]
[I'm so jealous. Let me switch spots with the random character for a couple of episodes.]
[Greedy girl, do you even know what being a secretary means? Move over, I'll do it!]
I scooped up the cash from the floor, counting it with a huge grin. It was 10 thousand dollars, easy money.
And that was on top of yesterday's haul from flipping 999 roses and the latest iPhone on Valentine's Day.
In just two days, I'd pocketed nearly 15 thousand dollars.
Hell yeah, this was the life.
*****
On my first day as a secretary, Jonah, cold-faced, tossed me a set of Bentley keys.
He said, "Miss Spates, this will be your car from now on. Head over to Miss Batton's company. It's her birthday today."
My eyes lit up.
"What's the gift... uh, never mind. Let's get going," I said hastily.
I followed behind Jonah, eyes locked on the gift bag in his hand. I was drooling.
After last night's barrage of snark, I pretty much got the picture.
I realized exactly what kind of crazy story world I'd gotten myself dropped into.
This was one of those "boss girl made a comeback" stories, where the heroine rose up and took on the world.
The lead, Tabitha Batton, was the love child of a mistress.
On the day she graduated university, her father Mateo dragged her back to the Batton family. From then on, life was anything but easy.
One random twist of fate, and she found herself in a winner-takes-all showdown with Mateo's legitimate daughter over who'd inherit it all.
The bet: whoever launched the most successful company outside the family's business would win the inheritance and become the new heiress.
Thanks to her main character halo, Tabitha's fledgling company got noticed by Jonah, the head honcho at Callahan Group, almost instantly.
Jonah was instantly smitten and launched a full-on pursuit, showering her with cash and resources, basically lifting her straight to the top as the next heiress.
But once she had all the power, when Jonah proposed, Tabitha turned him down cold, saying he was way too dark and twisted for her—he just wasn't good enough.
Jonah was crushed. He left a will behind and committed suicide it in the bathroom.
After Jonah died, Tabitha suddenly realized she actually loved him.
She inherited all of Jonah's wealth and spent the rest of her life with her childhood sweetheart, living in luxury, but deep down, she was never truly happy.
